CRI is not a measure of how natural light is. CRI measures how close a given source is to a similar-CCT black-body source's spectral power distribution. That is, it is a statistical measure of fit, not an indicator of aesthetics or color rendering. The reason CRI is quantitative is that it is a best-fit. But there is quite a lot of science (Kruithoff curve, other perceptual studies) that indicate that "white" is different from black-body light at most intensities, and that 'white' changes with intensity, and that color rendering is more complex than a CRI number.

Watts is energy. It can be input or output. So one can get 1 watt of green light in hand, or 1 watt of input power, or something.

Lumens is (watts of light at X wavelength) times (Some constant that represents how well we see that frequency). So with that 1 watt of green photons, we get 683 lumens at some optimum frequency. But this is a poor light for seeing.

Maximum efficacy for 'white' light is complex. 300 is a pretty good estimate, but it's not like a physical law. Quantum dots, for instance, would let us create a 'broad-spectrum' LED, as if you put together a 440, 441, 442...500nm array together.

The list is useful but North American centric. You did say partial list which is good as there are many other options out there.

I am not sure there is value putting in the price as it changes so fast and not to mention I would expect the products to quickly become obsolete.


I did not find the writing on CRI to be great, and bordering on inaccurate even if just a summary.

It is also inaccurate to say that "most difficult metric for incandescent replacement light bulbs to match". It is difficult to get 100CRI in a non-incan. It is not at all difficult to get 90+ whether LED or fluorescent. The reason it has not been done is the loss of efficiency. Marketing consensus is that most customers today will take efficiency/lower cost over high CRI with either lower efficiency and/or higher cost.

It's a Wikipedia page. You can very easily correct anything you see wrong with it. I posted it here because I was hoping you would correct and add to it.

the one thing I have to correct you on is that wattage is most definitely a unit of power and not energy. Watt-hour is a unit of energy.

Actually watt * hour = energy

I don't think a Wiki page is great for highly dynamic list information like this so i don't see much value in working on this page. There is already a CRI page.

Then where is the public supposed to go when looking for what bulbs to install?

It would be a rapidly-changing, seasonally-updated, regional-specific list. Including prices requires consideration of very local rebates and refunds. I generally suggest to people what to look for, and perhaps cite an example or two from the local store. I don't usually try to maintain a global list of products, especially ones so affected by personal aesthetics.
 
1. This is a list of High CRI light bulbs, which are relatively low in number. The list is intended to be a guide to which currently available bulbs are best. The price column is a secondary addition.

2. Most people are not lighting connoisseurs. This list is also intended to show people that there are LED lights that produce high quality light. Many people do not know that.

3. Your statement regarding maintaining a global list of products not being a good idea is a non sequiter. The whole point of having a list it to give people the ability to look through the list and see which products they like.

I am interested in the ultra-high CRI LED products, with CRI above 95. I was a little dissappointed not to find more information about this. I am sure other contributors will add to the list in the future. (the xicato artist series LED, for example)

This may be a good basic explanation, but it is not technically completely true. CRI just has to do with being able to accurately render a selected sample of colors. It is true that light sources with higher CRI are more likely to look natural, but this is not necessarily the case. A light source with 80 CRI can theoretically appear more natural than another light source with 90 CRI. But of course, any light source with 100 CRI will appear the most natural (assuming color its temperature is not extremely low or extremely high). I think the best way it can be described is that, the closer the CRI index is to 100, the more likely the index is to correlate with how natural the light is.

I think there is a danger in unquestionably equating CRI to light quality. Light quality is a difficult thing to try to quantify into a simple numerical index. There are several factors: overall light color, harshness, in addition different light sources can have different degrees of color rendering in different parts of the spectrum.

CRI is a measure using standard color samples of how well a light source duplicates a black body radiator under 5000K and sunlight over 5000K. No more, no less.
