I can't imagine anything an incan can do better than modern LED lights. What are you wanting it to do?

- JimmyMs hotwire regulator
- kiu socket
- bulb of your choice (see luxluthours destructive incan bulb testing) (Osram 6V would be easiest)
- Batteries of your choice (must have higher voltage under load than the voltage you want to drive the bulb at)
- use a pvc tube or somehting similar to keep the batteries from rattling in the mag tube
- metal op reflector from Kaidomain

If you can't find any of those things, just say so ;)

i have a glass lens and kid reflector but were do I get the other parts? I ain't ashamed that idk were to get that stuff :crackup:

I hope you know where to find a d-cell maglite. The size depends on what kind of batteries you want to use. 26650 Li-ions with 4Ah would be a smart idea. 32650s are rather rare.

JimmyMs JM-PhD-D1 PWM Hotwire Regulator can be found here. It allows you to set any voltage lower than that of your batteries under load and will "regulate" this voltage (keep the brightness constant). It will also protect your batteries from over discharge and will soft-start the bulb to lengthen its life (important for overvoltage). Before you buy it, you need to decide on a bulb, what voltage you want to run it at, how many modes you want, and what batteries you want to use (more importantly how many, so JimmyM can set the voltage for the overdischarge protection).

Kiu's bulb sockets can be bought here.

To choose a bulb, you need to know approximately how many Lumens you want for what amount of time. For example: 500 Lumens for 1 hour, 3000 Lumens für 10-20 minutes, etc. The more batteries you use, the longer the runtime will be at a given brightness. Thats the beauty of the regulator. This regualtor can be used with up to 9 4,2V Li-ion batteries in series. Other types of batteries also work (you just need a higher voltage than the desired bulb voltage). When you know how many Lumens you want, take a look at LuxLuthor's bulb tests. The bulbs with lower voltages require less batteries.
Good bulb choices are:
- the WA (Welch Allyn) 1185 - ~1000 Lumens at 10-10.5V, ~35W
- Osram 64250 - ~700 Lumens at 7V, ~25W
- Osram 64610 - ~2200 Lumens at ~13,5V, ~66W
- Osram 62138 - ~3500-4000Lumens at ~13.4V, ~125W (=> throwiest bulb)

Then there are the Osram IRC bulbs. They are noticeably more efficient and provide a floodier, more even beam with a perfectly round hotspot (axial filament). There biggest downside is that they only reach these high efficiencies and white light output at very high voltages (17-19V). This means that you will need more batteries in series.

A few examples:
- Osram 64429 IRC (25W nominal power, no test data available), maybe 2000 Lumens and 50W
- Osram 64432 IRC - ~3000 Lumens at ~18V, 72W
- Osram 64440 IRC - ~3700 Lumens at ~18V, 90W
- Osram 64447 IRC - ~4700 Lumens at ~18V, 111W (I have a light with this bulb - extremely bright)

There are obviously many more choices and you can also choose lower voltages. I chose the highest reasonable voltages for each bulb (so that is has a life expectancy of 10-20 hours). Choose a bulb you can actually order in the US or are able to source a decent amount of (WA 1185 can be had in the USA, the Osram bulbs can be ordered form the European shop Svetila - depending on the bulb type here or here).

You will then need batteries capable of delivering the power you want. For high-powered applications (more than 3A per battery) I would use 26650 batteries. Check HJK's battery tests for possbile models.

Obviously you will also need a good charger. Since you are using multiple batteries in series you will need a multimeter to check the voltages after charging.

If you want the light to only have one brightness setting you will need to follow these instructions when building it.
For multiple levels you will need to follow these instructions.

fivemega offers a lot of mag compatible modding parts related to hotwires and also (almost) complete flashlights here. He currently offers a 20% Christmas discount.

Well yes, I can, but it's not really a maglite anymore. I'm using a custom fivemega body and head. It does use the kiu socket, Jimmy's regulator, and the mag switch housing though. The body and head also have standard D-mag threads.

I will try to post some pictures.

I did a thread on the light in the German flashlight forum. It has lots of pictures, but you can only see them in full size when you are registered. Use google translate if you don't speak German ;).

My light is rather big and heavy (it uses 8 18650s). It's certainly the most efficient hotwire I have ever seen on this forum (because of the overdriven IRC bulb) and also by far the most practical of the brighter ones (>1000 Lumens). It produces a constant 3600 otf Lumens for a half hour!! We measured this in a (private) integrating sphere. When used outside it does not overheat. It can be run countinously. This is achieved through ample cooling fins (= large surface area) of the fivemega body and using a bulb that is not too powerful.

EDIT2: since Luxluthor never tested the lower powered IRC bulbs from Osram I have done some theoretical calculations on lumens and power draw. These should be somewhat accurate since the IRC bulbs are all similar. These bulbs (i.e. 7W, 14W, 25W) would be good for a floody light with long runtimes or small size. If you find these bulbs interesting just tell me and I will post my results.

now that is exactally what im talking about!!! haha its more a flamethower than anything else!! what is your average light output on that monstr?

One thing to note: because the IRC bulbs emit much less IR-light and because of this noticeably less heat, you can't really light things on fire. Even at 120W. The big reflector, which focuses the light at a longer distance also doesn't really help.

If you want to start fire, just take one of the normal bulbs like the Osram 64623 and a standard maglite head.

I recently received a 4D M*G host from FiveMega, bored out, with a 12xAA battery holder, and Osram 64458 pushing about 5500 lumens. High-drain cells. Lots of fun. Not sure what the runtime is ...

Workmanship and guidance from FiveMega is top-notch. Love my incans, no matter what anyone says. (Love my modded Vinh LED's too!) Also, you can leave a generic-looking M*G host on the front seat of your vehicle, and no one will give it a second glance or consider stealing it.

What kind of head does the light have? How the beam? Especially the throw?
 
Sorry, it's 16 AA. This bulb has a vertical coiled filament, which gives it great throw and hotspot with almost any head. I just have the stock size head on it now, but I also have a 2.5" Fivemega throwmaster I can put on it if I like. Right now, I am preferring stock size.
 
Good 32650 cells are available through Fasttech and also member "Jayrob" (last I knew of anyway) who I bought mine through (very quick service!). They give a substantial increase in capacity over any 26650. I measured the capacity of the last ones I bought at well over 7000mah if memory serves. :cool:

*EDIT*! Apparently memory did not serve very well this time. I ran a test on one of these cells (bought last May) and it did 5966mah at a 1a load. I think the cell I tested, new at the time, did about 6200mah. I had 7200 in my head but that wasn't right. Sorry for the misinformation.
