I'm doing some data gathering so I can build a long throw spotlight kind of light. I'm out in the country, I hear wild animals and I want to shine a long way off to see what's out there. Mostly deer, sometimes coyotes and wild hogs. An old fashioned quartz bulb would do it, but I want to experiment with high power LEDs and this is a good excuse.

Anyway, can someone comment on what these things are? I am considering experimenting with them.

Are they simply a single piece of silicon with leds wired series and parallel to get the high Vf? Then they sell various wattage versions because there are partial good sorts? Or maybe they are individual LEDS mounted on a heat sink configured for the different wattage.

These are just arrays of 1W LEDs wired in 10S3P configuration to reach Vf of 32-34V and forward current of 1050mA. If you're looking for a spot light/ thrower, you would be better off with 3 XM-Ls under aspheric optics. Using that 30W array would need a giant reflector/optic to focus the light.

I agree with using some thing like individual XML's, but if you want to go with the type you have linked to "they are called COB Chips On Board" then go for some bridgelux LED's they have much higher quality and they have reflectors designed for them already.

I get mine from Newark.... I have a 9000 lumen bridgelux LED with a 24 degree reflector I am playing around with right now...

yeah, after I looked more closely I realized that there are just 10 of them in series per row to get to 32 v. I was kinda thinking that an array like that might not make a good beam thrower, just a good floodlight.

I'll do some googling on the suggestions but jason, if you've posted something on yours pls post the link.
