I understand the basic design of most clicky tailswitches--basically the same as a clicky ballpoint pen. How about a two stage swich with high & low modes? Or for that matter, how are the surefire E2 series switches built? I don't have one yet so I've just read descriptions of how to use it.

I'm mainly just curious. I know lots of people (including me) would love to see more dual-mode lights or lights with dimmers. A dimmer seems simple enough (just wire in a potentiometer) but I'm not really clear on how the dual mode switches would be built.

Might be easier to make a twist-head switch for hi-lo and use the tailcap for on-off.

The problem with a tailcap dimmer (for, say, a Dat2Zip BadBoy-type mod) is that it requires either a third electrical connection to the board (one is metal case, one is the batteries, third would rewuire a wire) to switch it. If you had the head twist to either switch a mechanical switch, or something like Dat2Zip's prototype magnet-switched BadBoy. make a notch inside the head, glue a little rare-earth shard in there, and glue the hall-effect sensor inside the tube.
