How does the Lumamax series work?

I picked up a mint L1 and playing with a L2 at the moment. I was legoing and put my E2C adapter, C2 head and Malkoff on the L2. What do you know? It works.



I have a dual stage malkoff.



I can run this same set up on my L1 and the 1 CR123 is powerful enough to drive the M60.



what exactly is going on in the lumamax to allow this to work?
