I am thinking of getting a X5. I have lots of used 123's do they work well in this flashlight?

With no regulation, you'll get out of it exactly what you put into it. But at least the Li cells are somewhat self-regulating.

I'll not quickly step aside so that somebody who actually owns one can give you some relevant info.

The Inova X5T is not regulated....what a shame! It would quite possibly be the best LED flashlight it it were.

Used lithium operation sucks with the X5T, that is one of only 2 complaints about the X5T. The other is that you cannot stand the light on the table because of the switch.

Well, I ran a few tests:

NEW batteries
SureFire E2e 1280 cd
Inova X5 (orig) 72 cd
Arc sLS 204 cd

USED batteries (retired after 2 months
of intermittent use in E2e)
SureFire E2e 760 cd
Inova X5 (orig) 56 cd
Arc sLS 192 cd

I think from now on I'll be using my SLS to drain cells that are retired from the E2e. Smaller, brighter, drains more of the charge...what more can one ask for?

A friend wants my X5...I think I'll sell it to her. The only thing I've really liked it for was a microscope illuminator, but the Lambda Illuminator works about as well as long as you don't get the off-color side lobes of the LS emitter doing the majority of the illumination. It's almost too bright <smile>. It works great with a NiteIze fiber optic tube for the 440x and the Arc AAA works even better for the 32x and 100x.

I put some used 123 out of my LX in my new X5T and could not see a difference at all, but their was a huge difference from the new batts. that came with the X5T in my Ledgend LX. I had approx. 30 to 40 min of total use onmy LX over a 4 to 5 month period

FWIW:

Being annoyed w/ the tiny lanyard hole in the original X5, I broke down and bought a Tactical...first thing, of course, is the stringent empirical comparison test, i.e. which one lights up the 40-foot-away backyard fence better? Hmm...maybe the Tactical's just a wee bit brighter? But, could that be the used 123's in the old 'un versus the new 123's in the Tactical? So, I swapped the batteries. Nope. The Mk 5 Human Eyeball detects no difference in brightness.

The Tactical's just a bit bigger, but I do like the tailswitch for work use, and the ability to fit a useful lanyard*, so it goes into the work pack. Along with a Pelican Versabrite II in case the safety folks get picky, and/or I need both hands to take notes. The "old" X5 goes into the vehicular glovebox.

*If I guess correctly, the lanyard mod shown on the LED Museum review involves drilling and tapping a camera-mount threaded hole in the end of the old X5, something for which I have neither the tools nor skill.

I tried the same swap on my old an new X5 and my X5T was still a little bit brighter
