I picked up a 4 pack of Duracell AAA 1000mah nimhs for a headlamp. The lamp will be used on again off again during a 3 month military course. How good are these batteries at holding a charge over 3 months with infrequent use?

I've never actually done any experimentation to that effect with these batteries. But bear in mind that these are NOT LSD batteries. So while they will CERTAINLY give you more runtime compared to Duraloops fresh off the charger, I wouldn't count on them holding anything close to a full charge after three months. If you need a battery that is going to hold it's charge after three months, go with Duraloops (white top, Japanese made Duracell NiMH batteries).

They would probably have about 2/3 charge after 3 months until they start to develop high self discharge then maybe they would be charged for a week. If you aren't going to use them often during a month invest in duraloops as even though the capacity is less it will have 70 percent charge after a year or about 7 percent loss every 3 months.

Used to have dozens of duracells and energizer ni-mhs but they'd lose most of their capacity by the time I needed them.
Pain in the arse to keep them charged up. Grab some eneloops.
