does the OE mag switch usually last in a mag85 using the fivemega bi-pin adaptor and wa1185 bulb? The AW looks like a fine replacment.

The 3.5 amp draw of that bulb is not a problem for the switch in either the D or C size host.

What you do want to do though, as part of your mod build, is to carefully take the switch apart and clean and lubricate the contacts with Deoxit and then apply Deoxit Gold. This stuff works amazingly well.

Deoxit removes oxidation and minor corrosion. Deoxit Gold works as a contact enhancer and will eliminate any possible arcing in the switch when you turn your Mag85 on.

You just use a tiny amount of this stuff so even a small tube of each will last you a good long time.

If you can't find it locally, 4Sevens sells it here.

The AW switch is a fine bit of kit but the bulb socket in it is not user replaceable.

That sounds like a good idea. The mag I was planning on using is a bit over 15 yrs old but I may buy a shiney new one to use.
Thanks for the good advice

The older Mags without the D in the serial number have different switches from the newer ones, and NOS switches are little harder to come by. Buying a new host might be the best option, but you should be able to take it apart and clean your old switch up nicely if you want.

Well I went out and picked up a new mag. The one I was thinking about using is the old model without any letter in the serial #. The new one is much better looking anyway. While preping it up I did a little checking with the ohm meter. The switch was making very good contact without any loss before treatment with Deoxit Gold. There wasn't any loss from the flat spring to the lamp holder either. I did read a very little bit of loss in the spring that makes contact with the bulb. The biggest loss was in the tail cap spring. It must be a longer wire before coiling. So the biggest impact would be to strap the tail cap spring. For now I'm going to leave the springs alone with the two of them together just being fractional ohms.

Edit: leaving the springs alone may help me keep from zapping a filament.
