They claim a hid worklight placed in center of room, if bumped, could explode, sending flying glass that could cut you. I assume the arc, could cause fires
This is in a 2004 thread, before popularity in head lamps and handhelds using HID. Before the Wobble light that uses HID. There is alot of misunderstandings in the posted thread, and inaccuracies.
I bought a homemade 400 watt HID from ballast that is small as 2 $15 halogen worklights. It would be ideal 40k lumen/20k hour work light to put in middle of room to eliminate moving light around when painting. It is suprisingly cool, I can grab cage surrounding hid bulb, cool to touch. Not a loud buzz. Also, it looks as if it is a bulb inside a bulb, where the plasma part is inside the outer bulb.
Are they that dangerous. Wonder how I could make a wrap around diffuser to make it safer. Would just a clear 1 gallon milk jug be enough to stop flying glass?
