Hyundai HCD8 LED Headlights

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

Very short article showing design concept. Only an estimate on when they would show up in a production vehicle (2007-08), but that could be overly optimistic. You will probably need 1,000lm output array of LED's to get a beam pattern with enough throw/width, and uniform beam intensity to be acceptable for an auto headlamp. Then there is the problem with current Luxeon higher wattage LED's shorter lifespan. When higher efficiencies are available in higher wattage LED's we will probably see them used for auto headlamps. More reliable, smaller, and less costly as compared to the current 'trendy' high-output, glare monster 90lm/w HID's.

They will probably become the 'standard' for the foreseeable future, they work great as red rear brakelights now-except for the annoying glare/asthetically ugly look, which can be overcome later by using soft light diffusion lens covers when the higher output LED's hit the market in xxx years?

With LuxIIIs already putting out 85 lumens in a flashlight (Inova T3), and 100 in the HDS Action Light III, how far away are we really from the output of a 90 Lumen HID ?

I think with a little work we could be there. It seems to me that some of our brilliant CPF modders could produce a 12 volt compatible LED headlamp array with the proper combination of reflectors and optics that would rival anything currently available. All of the same advantages we see in LED flashlights would easily carry over to automotive use. Think of the tiny proportion of the front of a vehicle that would need to be dedicated to headlights.

Modders to your shops ! Build a better headlight ! Smaller, Brighter, Cooler (temp.), Longer lasting, Cheaper !!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif

Oops! About 50 times further away if you're comparing with HID - 90 Lumens per Watt > times 50 Watts!
