I just got a Schottkey diode for my Arc.......

Does it matter which way I solder it in to place? What I mean, does it have a front and back, left or right, you know a certain way the current flows through it?

I also got an r15 sense resistor to boost the voltage. Do these also have a left and right or front and back?

They should always face magnetic north.

Just kidding. resistors have no polarity, diodes do.

Often diodes are marked with a stripe on one side, that side is the negative side if you want current to flow through it. Usually the white line goes toward the led + connection in a boost converter.

ok, yes there is a white line (with the use of a magnifying glass) and right next to it S8j.

Ok so where do the two connection pads lead to? If there is one pad going to the led + output, then there is where the line should be.

Here is a good pic of it. I can't get it to turn on. Anyone want to diagnose the problem? The diode burned up so I bought a new one and still doesn't work /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif BTW That is not my board, I snagged it from another post.

The end of the diode with the line should be nearest to the resistor labeled R15. BTW, the line is generally the cathode which is the negative side of the diode if you want current to flow thru it.

My guess would be that the Linear Technology 1618 is destroyed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smoker5.gif

When the diode opens, it will take out the 1618 with it. Putting the diode in backwards will most likely destroy the 1618 as well since it will appear that there's no load to the circuit.

Ok...well now what? Any Arc boards for sale or should I just get a whole new Arc or just replace the diode and the 1618?

One Q to Chris then - what is the symptom when the Diode "opens" - no more current going through, right ? If the Diode fails but still lets current pass through the LTC could still be suspected to be OK ?

G Pilot: Call peter at Arc and ask if you can send it in. He'll charge you to fix it, but it shouldn't cost too much - less than a completely new light, anyway...
