I need help on finding the perfect folder for \"me\"

I am basically looking for the best deal on a knife that one can find. . . I'm not much of a knife fanatic, the knives I've owned in the past has been ones on sale from Big 5 or some other catalog that get's sent to my house.
I'm hoping that someone can point me to a store that is having some sort of special.
What I'm looking for preferably is:
-Tanto/Plain blade
-Belt Clip
-Easily Flips Open
-Tactical Look /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
-Relatively inexpenisve as I seem to lose knives easily?
-Some type of brand name?
Any help would be greatly appreciated in my venture.

Thanks!
Joel

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Benchmade 550 Griptilion. <$75
The Axis lock on this knife is great.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

I'd go with the CRKT M-16 too. Mine has a tanto blade and the "body" is made from carbon fiber. Not slick carbon fiber, but somehow rough, and easy to grip. It doesn't slip from a wet hand. I think I paid around $55.00 at a knife & gun show. (Still, I'd hate to lose it.) I do remember that there were two sizes. I bought the "small". The blade is close to 3 inches long.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

I like the CRKT, but the link shows it for around $70.00.
A bit rich for my blood. . .
I can pay close to $70 for an SF E2E-HA, but I just can't find it in me to spend that much on a pocket knife? Go figure? The Griptilion looks to be about $80.00 from what I can find.
I'm hoping to find a knife with the looks and features of the M16-04, but at a closeout price /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
ex. $100 knife on sale for <$50.00 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the info guys!

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Benchmade 705. Axis lock, pocket clip, 2.9" blade for sheeple-friendliness, drop point blade for utility. About $82. It's the ultimate EDC knife.

If you want a longer blade, the Benchmade 710. Just like the 705, but with a 3.9" recurve blade. About $100.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Do a search on the web and lots of dealers will come up. Other than the tanto requirement I would second the benchmade griptillian at about $60 or less. I would also reccomend the Camillus EDC. The custom version by Darrel Ralph would go around $400+. The production version can be had for under $50.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

The Camillus EDC looks to be very good.
found it for about $43.00.
Anyone suggest a reputable dealer out there?

Thanks!

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

It looks to be either a Griptilian (large) or the Camillus EDC. The Camillus is winning due to its price point. . .
I'll let you know what I get, again thanks for the info.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

I would look into any of the Kershaw Ken Onion knives too. Very nice knives for the money. The Kershaw Vapor seems to be a great little low cost knife and comes in two sizes, If you are considering the Camillus EDC you might look into this as an alternative as they are around $25 at Walmart and feature very similar designs. I don't own a Vapor but alot of people have good things to say about them.

I have a Griptilian and love it, very lightweight, nonslip scales, easy to open, positive lock, good steel I use it mostly on trips, it is worth the extra dough. The Camillus EDC is too small and thin for my hands personally, I can't effectively use a knife for work if it is too thin or has too short a blade and to me the EDC is both.

Lately I've been carrying a CRKT Lightfoot M1 which is a little bit too big and rugged for most folks to carry but only cost me about $48 shipped. I never really liked the AUS-8 steel but CRKT seems to know how to temper the stuff well enough to have changed my mind about the usefulness of that steel.

Alot of knives out there and most of them are very good due to stiff competition in the industry now. I would get out there and test a few out for comfort, stability and ease of operation first hand if you aren't familiar with good knives. A picture on the internet doesn't do much good if you can't see the scale to your hand, feel the action of operation, and see if you like the weight and fit.

Let us know what you get.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

the Ken onion knives loose the edge quick compared to the 154cm steel of the EDC I have carried the vapor for the last 2 months and just switched back tothe EDC cause i got tired of sharpening the vapor...

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Kershaw, as well as most production knifemakers, use many different steels on different models and lines. 420 and 425 modified and 440A and AUS6 are pretty cheap as far as blade steels go, AUS8 is not so bad if tempered correctly, they usually need frequent sharpening with heavy usage but are fine for those who don't rely on a knife too frequently. Good old 440C, 154CM, ATS34 (the Japanese version of 154CM) and VG-10 are all great steels, but the CPM and SV particle steels are the top knotch steels these days IMHO.

My Kershaw Ken Onion Avalanche is CPM 440V (SV-60) and holds an edge for months, has very grippy textured G-10 scales too and titanium liners, and cost me $75 I haven't seen another particle steel bladed knife much less, one with G-10, titanium liners and assisted opening for under $100. I am really happy with it, it was my EDC for 2 full years and will accompany me back to work again, soon as I land a new job, SV-60 and SV-30 are amazing steels. the assisted opening Speedsafe feature is priceless for situations requiring single handed deployment, it allows you to deploy the blade fast without distraction. I have the Random Task too a very nice knife but is dressier with a polished modified Warncliff blade and polished G-10.

The other day I was at Paragon Sports in Manhattan, a famous sporting goods store that carries some of the best custom and production knives around, and I was looking at the new Lone Wolf -Bill Harsey knife (A rugged looking monster that rivals the custom Strider folders, utilizing SV-30 blade steel and costing around $280) and the guy behind the counter and I were joking about the size of the thing and then he leans over close, like he's letting me in on a trade secret, glancing around and says "you want a GOOD knife!": and hands me the Avalanche. He smiled and laughed when I told him I'd been carrying one for the last two years and I shared his opinion 100%. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've got two Microtech's (Socom and Lightfoot LCC) that are 154CM and a Gerber that is ATS34 and they are nice knives too but I don't use them that much except for weekend knives (they are a little too pricey for a knife that gets as much use as my work EDC). I have some customs that are in those steels too and are pretty nice but again are more for show and tell. D2 is a good tool steel adapted to knives but it isn't as corrosion resistant as the semi and true stainless' and is pretty tough to put an edge on but it works great. I have a Bob Dozier Toothpick that is a great little knife but I really have to work at keeping it clean in the summertime when sweat gets on it and putting the right edge on it can be a frustrating experience.

Since you can't experience the maintenance involved in a knife merely by picking one up, I thought I would give you a little heads up. I still think you should go and check out how they fit and feel, that really can make the difference. I personally attend quite a few knife shows a year although I missed my favorite, the Blade Show in Atlanta, this year due to being out of work at the moment and can tell you from experience that some knives just "speak" to you the moment you try them out. It's just about as fun as trying out a new flashlight (and just as addictive)! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hope this helps!

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

I second what tsg68 said about trying knives on for fit & size.

The Camillus EDC is about the same size as the Benchmade 705.

Good luck on your mission:)

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Thanks for all the information here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I ran over to Wally World last night to go and check out the Vapor, cool little knife, but as you all have stated. A knife just jumps at you when its the one that wants to be taken home(gotta try it out). The Vapor looked good, but didn't seem to feel right in my hands? There was a ton of other knives in the window, but they were busy, so maybe I'll go back when I can handle a few more.
I need to keep my ears to the ground, as to my knowledge, I've never heard of a knife show locally (Northern California). I see a few stands at Gun Shows...
Unlike flashlights, there are a lot more things to look for it seems, wider selection and different price points. I'm glad you guys are here to give me a hand /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif
Addictive? Please don't get me started on knives...
I'm still hooked on completing my gun collection /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Living in California is making it tough....
Then my wife would kill me if she knew I've spent well over a $1000.00 on flashlights /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twak.gif

Thanks!

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

So far it looks like this (no specific order/street price):
Kershaw Avalanche = $88.95
Benchmade 550 Griptilion = $66.95
CRKT M16-14M = $59.95
Camillus EDC = $42.95
I've up'd my limit so that I can get a knife that can be both good for show and tell and also be a great EDC (or weekend knife).

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Again, got to recommend the Benchmade 705. If you check out the forums at Bladeforums.com and Benchmade.com, you'll see that lots of people carry the 705 for EDC.

The other knives you've listed are nice (I've considered the Camillus once too), but other than the BM 550, all are frame or liner locks. The Axis Lock really is in a different league altogether. Please be sure to check out any Axis Lock model in person before deciding.

I'm 99% sure I'll never buy another frame or liner lock again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

Hey skyline. I feel the same way. After buying an Axis lock (BM942), I got rid of all my liner lock knives. As soon as I can find some extra money, I want a 735.

Re: I need help on finding the perfect folder for

There is no such thing as the perfect folder......I have over 100 quality tactical folders/OTFs, and still I keep looking for more! I'm now believing that the CRK Sebenza will come close, so that's next on my list. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sssh.gif

TSG (The Smart Guy? ) has some good advice in this thread. Just stay away from <$100 junk.
