ICR-18650 vs. ICR-18650H

Ok, I'm sure this is probably a newbie question, but hey, I am. I'm actually trying to rebuild my battery pack for my laptop. The cells inside say they are ICR-18650H. I can't find these online anywhere! But, I can find ICR-18650. Is there a difference? Will the 18650's work in place of the 18650H? And how do I figure out what the mAh of the current cells is? The battery pack itself says 4400mAh but there is nothing on the cells, and I can't find even 18650's at 4400mAh. Mostly just 2200 and 2600. Someone please give me some clues.
 
Being a 4400mah pack, it would have had 6 cells, wired 3s2p

They will be 2200mah cells. I'm not sure what the 'H' means, but I doubt it's important.

Ok. Sounds good so far. One more question. Would using 6 x 3300mAh instead of 6 x 2200 mAh be okay?
 
Just a tip, while I've never attempted this myself, you would most likely be ahead to just purchase an OEM replacement battery pack for your laptop. The cells you obtain for rebuilding your battery pack are not likely to be as good a quality, and certainly will not be matched as well as the cells in an OEM pack, so in the end your probably not going to save any money rebuilding it yourself. You could buy a cheap replacement pack, but then you would be in the same situation. Then again you might obtain one for about the same cost of rebuilding yours, but it would save you the trouble.

Of course if you just want to try doing it yourself, there's nothing wrong with that. Just a thought.

No, it wouldn't be ok, because 3300mAh cells don't exist, and you are looking at fake / low quality cells. If you do attempt to rebuild a laptop pack, do not settle for anything less than brand name cells: Sanyo, Panasonic, Sony, LG, Samsung, MOLI etc. Also soldering directly to cells is not recommended and you will want to source tabbed cells if possible. I agree that it probably isn't worth the cost / trouble to rebuild one. I'd see if you can source a new OEM pack first at a fair price.

Also, if your cells say ICR-18650H, that is likely just the model number it it could be referring to these MOLI cells.
 
I came across this thread in Yahoo search, which is almost funny because I'm already a CPF member, and had thought to actually look here specifically next.
I was just given 67 of the 18650H cells by a friend.

I think these will come in handy with some of my prototyping, but other than that at the moment, I'm really not sure what to do with 67 x 18650H cells. Guess I'll have to find SOMETHING to do with them! 248V hmm or 147.4 Ah... so many possibilities!
These batteries have the tabs on each end. Perhaps I'll make battery packs out of them for use in my mine exploring activities.

I had also wondered about the "H"; which are the 3.75V / 2200mAh models, as opposed to the "J" which are 3.75V @ 2400mAh variety.

Though I do note they have 26700's which are 3.8V/2900mAh batteries,
and an 18650E which are 3.8V / 1400mAh. I'm not sure why you'd want an 18650 that's only 1400mAh but hey, whatever.

Actually they do :P They will soon be in wider availability. However I agree with the rest of your post. The other thing is - if the charge controller can cope with i.e newest. Panasonic NCR18650A (3100-3150mAh), when it was programmed for 2200mAh cells. Definitely it will not charge properly new Samsung 3000mAh+ cells (with termination at 4.35V). There are a lot of problems with rebuilding laptop battery pack - installing new cells is usually the smallest issue.

18650H - they are standard, 2200mAh cells - the most popular type you can find in laptop battery packs. They like charging current up to 1C (recommended 0.5C) and discharge current up to 2C (recommended 1C). If you have them tabbed - then they are ideal for building battery packs. Just be sure to have some protection circuits.
18650E - they are older version of IMR series powercell with discharge current of 20A (power tools, EVs etc.)

LOL. Please point me to 3300mAh 18650 cells available on the market right now. They don't exist! :p. Closest is the NCR18650A.

Sony has some 3500mAh cells coming out, but those have a 4.3v charge voltage and a 2v cutoff voltage. So a very large voltage swing.
 
you didn't say "available on the market" you said "exist" :P Initial tests show that 18650WH1 have minimal capacity of around 3.3Ah. They should be available in December on the market. And regarding voltage range - yep, it's by design. Honestly, only around 120mAh is stored between 2.4V and 2V.
