hey what's up guys

just introducing myself, I'm still a newb when it comes to modding flashlights but I have a few led lights so far.

mostly some cheap dorcys and I just bought a tk11, I'm a repo man so I'm always looking for something better and brighter. which explains my compulsive buying of flashlights lol

hopefully I can learn a thing or two about lights while I'm here

Re: hey what's up guys

Welcome e-ville! I'm new too, and this seems to be a great place to learn!

:welcome:

I'm looking to buy a LumaPower MVP TurboForce P7 LED flashlight, but I'm waiting until I hear more about it here. See you 'round the forum!

Take a look at Malkoff drop-ins for maglites, I just bought 2 triple drop-ins for my mag, basically like having 3 TK11's in one light, except for the hotspot, more of a flooder.

Re: hey what's up guys

Many people here start out modding Maglites or simple LED swaps.

For the Maglites check here(most of them on that thread are drop-ins).

If any of your LED lights have a Luxeon, you can start by swapping the Luxeons out for a current gen LED like the Seoul P4. Double the output(at least) and with the same runtime. Current gen LEDs are at least twice as efficient as last gen ones.

being a repo man, wouldnt you not want to draw alot of attention to yourself.....If you are as bright as the sun someone minght get angry with ya and try to start a fight, well thats how it is around here:ohgeez:

Re: hey what's up guys

thanks for the welcomes and the info

Keukalite- I agree, there seems to be an incredible amount of knowledge here

Winmag- Ive considered it, I have a plain led upgrade in my maglight now (dim and useless). but for the price of the malkoff and for what i need in a light the maglight isnt an option so that just sits around the house

Gunner- if I had the extra money lying around Id send my mag out to Blackbear!! lol, but all of my dorcys are luxeon...as a matter of fact i was drawn to these forums by the video of the upgraded dorcy that had the Seoul Bin C 900 Lumen mod. so I have been thinking about trying my hand at modding one of the old ones i have sitting around.

the thing is, i dont completely understand all of the technical talk in some of these threads (numbers and calculations etc). ordering a certain led and soldering it in wouldnt be a problem though

and Nemo- therein lies the problem. its kind of a double edged sword as far as lighting goes....I need a light that can throw a beam from the street into a persons backyard, but without spilling on thier house as to announce im there...yet the beam still has to be powerful enough at that range to identify what im looking at. and i also need to be able to reduce the power if i have to do some paperwork or read a file while the truck is blacked out in front of someones house.

but then again it still has to be bright enough to blind or stun a person if they come running out and bright enough to identify if they have a weapon before i draw mine. working in the Flint and Detroit areas thats definitley one of the most important characteristics lol

oh yea and it also needs to be small enough to put in my pocket. cause you have to move quick, between not knowing whether your being watched, and not knowing if the car has an alarm. having to stow a bigger flashlight somewhere in the midst of all that excitement is frustrating.

did i mention i love this job? haha

as i said in an earlier post.

Im looking for a serious thrower, I use my flashlight alot for work and i need a strong useable beam up to 150+ feet. with as little spill as possible. I also need it to be no bigger than my TK11

does this kind of light exist?? what brands should i be looking at?? :candle:

Best off the shelf that can be had would be a Dereelight DBS, or a Lumapower MRV.
The DBS has a noticeably larger head than your TK11 but throws better than the MRV. The MRV also has a large head but not quite as big, though I beleive it is longer it doesn't throw quite as far bt has some other nice features such as its UI. 500' should be no problem for ether of these beasties though.

If you want a true pencil beam without any sidespill you have to do an aspheric mod. It is most often and easily done with a M@glite host which is definitley larger than that TK11. If you hang around read and learn you may be able to come up with parts on your own and mod an existing light with an asperic lens in place of the reflector and stock window. So are you willing to mod?

I think a light with an optic(the ones with very little or no spill) or a lens might work.

Most of the light will be in the hotspot.

What price range?
What runtime?

Hard to beat the Surefire E2DL - a perfect mix of output/size/quality.

A quick search will yield tons of great info.

:welcome: Sounds like a job for an SF E2L or an L2??? Am I wrong?

id probably be willing to mod after enough learning and knowing i have all the right parts.

i cant exactly quantify run time, it would need to last a few minutes here and there throughout dusk to dawn

a little bit bigger than the tk wouldnt be a huge issue as long as i can throw it in my pocket and run if i have to

id like to stay around 150$

i know i could mod one of my dorcys for significantly less. but im still concerned about the optics. it has a magnifying lense

the dereelight looks pretty promising.

Re: hey what's up guys

You seem to be a guy that would like a big Mag led. Focus the beam and bust somebodies head open. It seems fitting that the only guy in Michigan with a job is stealing cars legally.

Re: hey what's up guys

i got a good laugh from that one

ironically, a friend of mine let me help him out doing repos after i got laid off from my last job, and then i got hooked

i dont usually go around looking for trouble but it always manages to find me sooner or later so i gotta make the best of it lol.

Yep DBS is likely you're best bet until you figure out an aspheric. Or...

There is another option though that I've remembered. Tehre are a couple lights that have a "focusing" optics system. Coast/ LED lenser being the first ones to use it. The latest Coast models appear to be improved over their past offerings so they're worth some consideration. However they have flaky battery configurations for most of their lights. They do have a 2AA light that may work though. I've beein interested in the 4AA one, it will be alrger than the TK11 but may still be pocketable. Check them out at Batteryjunction (don't forget the discount code for CPF).
In the future a far better quality focusing light should become available form Barbolight. (check them out in the custom builders and moders section).
