I was finished with my Mag mod when I noticed a little thermal grease got on one of the LEDs. That stuff is SO messy. So I wiped it off. Apparently, I wiped too hard and broke the dome off of the LED.

Now I have to order another one. My friend was ready to come pick it up. Now he has to wait a few more days.

That arctic silver spreads like wild fire when you get a dab on your fingers. I'm pissed!

Have you tried powering the LED? With no dome and that huge reflector, it might have a pretty good beam.
 
It does seem to still be intact but I don't really have anything to put it in. I would have to pick a few more pieces off of it before firing it up.

There are only two types of flashlight enthusiasts, those who have broken the dome off of an expensive LED and those who will break the dome off of an expensive LED.

Some body on here use to dedome xml on purpose to gain higher lux readings. If you can manage to get the rest of the dome off without destroying it. Then it should make a better thrower. Lambda, at another forum got almost double the lux reading by dedoming the xml. Do a google search for "dedomed xml 95000 lux".
I have tried twice and have had no success. I keep pulling off one of the bonding wires.:ohgeez:

But at what cost? I doubt that a dedomed LED will survive very long. Perhaps I should do a dedomed XPG endurance test. :huh:

Lambda had pulled off all but one bonding wire on his first attempt. On his second attempt he dedomed it with success on dec 07 2010. His last post was on mar 31 2011. So thats almost 4 months and he never posted that it died. I would think lambda knows what he is doing. He sells lights at lambdalights.com that have dedomed emitters. I can't see him selling a expensive light that will soon die.
