QTC pills So far have been a great experience in practical terms, but as you all know ramping is not always as smooth as butter, in real use it doesnt bother much as long as it still ramps, but the comfort of a smoother ramping makes things a lot better.

Enter a little list, compilation if you wish of what has worked for me so far (the parts in grey are outdated thanks to my latest fix, but might help users with other issues):


- adding stability to the QTC pill, CPF member netprince solved this by gluing the pill perfectly centered into the identation on the bottom of the QTC holder, This is one of the most important fixes, however adding glue for me added also a little more stiffness because the pill surface expansion when compressed is hampered a bit by the glue mantaining it into position, and also the pill eventually separated from the glue.

What happens here is that the holder identation edeges bite bits of the QTC pills corners, this little bits are left around and conduct electricity before the pill does, making ramping a bit jumpy, with the glue the pill stays in place and solves this problem.

-trying different hole sizes in the QTC pill: the hole size by default is very sensitive, it does help reach full brightess with less effort, but your uses may have different needs, for my case i needed a little bit more range, so a smaller hole does help but at the expense of being a little more stiff, this translates into a harder to press momentary and harder to twist constant (altough the twist effort difference doesnt matter in 2 handed operation, it does if you want to operate the twist one handed), 1mm diameter less than the default hole size is what i use.

A little mix of everything that i came up with:

Grab a new QTC pill without hole, make a hole (i use the opening of a metal mechanical pen) BUT keep the little round QTC left off that will be inside the opening of the mechanical pen, assemble everything together the same as always but with a little difference: insert the little round QTC left off inside the hole as if you were trying to make the pill whole again, what does this do? this still lets the pill compress as when it only has the empy hole, but since there are a couple of spikes in the center of the bottom and top of the holder they will hold the round hole filler in place and this one will hold the rest of the pill in place (not perfectly i know but better than before).

This will ensure contact to full every time you want, the pill will shift less, and the effort needed for compression will remain almost the same as when you only used the empty hole pill.

it might work better if you use a hole filler a little smaller than the hole, will try that later.


The best methods i have found yet:


Folded copper seat (warning, may break QTC)

Folded a copper foil tape a few times (removed the glue off of it with a bit of isoprophyl alcohol), as to increase the height around 0.5 mm (havent measured the fold i made and it compresses after first use so take that under consideration), and put the little square i folded in the identation on the bottom part of the QTC holder assembled everything back together and it works great! it becomes smoother the more you use it because the folded copper square sits better after a few compressions.

It seems that when the QTC pills are new they are taller, after some compressions the height makes them move inside the holder causing many of the jumps we experience. after twisting and pushing a lot i put in the original QTC pill that i have really operated the light with a lot (way over the 1000 compressions) and became a little jumpy, it worked great too!, if you are like me that likes to be pushing the momentary just for the sake of it and twisting it back and forth like crazy just to play with your light, this little fix will work great.

The hole size Curt designed is the best i have tried so far, bigger and it will compromise the integrity of the pill, smaller and it works but is stiffer, this size works great, effort needed to get to full is on par with my Surefire L1!, and the L1 doesnt have infinite ramping.

I am pretty sure that if the identations on the bottom part of the holder are made shallower there will be a lot less users complaining about QTC being jumpy, now it works really smooth and the folded foil seems to make it spring back faster after compression.

Hole punch copper seat (seems safe for QTC pill, but the folded method makes a better softer activation on momentary)

After seeing that the folded copper method could damage the QTC, i tried something else with the copper tape, a hole punch makes a circle that is almost the same size of the round identation where the QTC goes inside the capsule, i made a circle out of the copper tape and inserted it in there, since it comforms to the shape of the qtc quite easily is keeps it in place quite well, then took the QTC out again and added another circle, tried and then added another ,the reason i add i succesively instead of all the circles at once is that its easier to seat them inside after they are conformed, works out really good and since this isnt so tall and is the same shape as the identation i am assuming it wont break the QTC, while adding stability and a little less height than the folded seat.




So forget about the methods i mentioned before, this ones oudates all of them and is really simple and cheap! you dont even need to buy a new QTC pill.

Very happy to have found a way to make the light work really smooth in what so far seems to be a reliable way! :):) hope it helps others.


please share your improvements and let me know if any of this fixes fail and for what reason, that way we can make a list of things to improve with this very new material.

Tried one more thing: turned the hole filler sideways, seems to work even a bit better, same range of variability, less effort than when the filler was in the flat position.

*edit: experience may vary, it seems if you put the filler sideways its prone to shifting inside, im putting it back to fill it flat like before

Height!, the answer for me was height, finally after trying the before mentioned methods that came to my head the most efficient and reliable is to increase the height of where the pill seats. The methods used before improved the light for a short time, and then became jumpy again, this one is holding on after A LOT of twisting and pushing the momentary, man i must be really wearing out the battery compartment!... ah what the hell its all for the good of ironing this lights few wrinkles.

So, I think I understand your directions correctly, but let me repeat them just to be sure.
- Remove QTC from pill.
- Wrap the QTC in copper foil tape (with glue removed) a few times to increase height 2mm.
- Return copper wrapped QTC to the bottom indentation of the pill, reassemble and put back in place.

Does this sound right? I am eager to try this, but I need to order the copper tape first. Thanks for sharing your discovery.:)
 
sassaquin: Dont fold the foil around the QTC that will make contact like if the QTC werent there, instead just fold the foil by itself, like making a seat for the QTC then when inserting on the identation put the folded foil first then the QTC and finish assembling, will work perfectly now :) seems like the foil also makes it springier resulting in it snapping back faster (should also make twisting to decrease output smoother too)

Also try with aluminum foil, i just used copper because i had it in my little box of parts, but if i wouldnt have had it i would have used aluminum foil instead, bear in mind its weaker because its thinner so you could use that while the copper tape arrives (copper tape is a tad thicker and a lot springier)

a little note, i just mentioned 2mm but didnt measure it, 2mm might be too tall, might be 1mm, and it will compress after the first use.


I am happy to share this; i wasted a few QTCs looking for a smoother ramping and it doesnt even involve a new QTC lol! i would like to save time and QTC for other users as the one Curt includes in the lights works perfectly!, everyone please let me know your results!

I think I'll skip trying the aluminum foil as I just order a foot of copper tape - maybe it will get here next week. I hope other members try this out and post their outcome. Experiments are fun!
 
They sure are, btw just took out the pill to see the aprox size, its less than 1mm probably 0.5 or less, will edit the post to correct that.
 
new info and WARNING!,

After playing with the light quite a bit (pushing the button like crazy) the whole night i saw a little jump, opened it to see what happened and the QTC was broken in the shortest parts of it between its edge and hole.

Dont know if its from too much compression (seems unlikely as the operation was really soft, softer than before the mod), or maybe the edges of the folded copper tape "seat" could have cut it (i had it in a postion that coud have).

So be careful if you try this as you will probably damage the QTC, i have sanded the edges of my copper seat and also the corners but i dont know if that will prevent breaking another QTC, also pressed it a lot to reduce height.

Since i am using a new QTC pill again the light is working perfectly without modification, if it turns jumpy again i will try the slimmer sanded copper seat.

A note: the new pill im using has its hole perfectly centered and that seems to improve the operation a lot compared to an uncentered hole, not to mention its probably more resistant.

Please be really careful, specially if you only have one QTC with you.

just in case i think CPF member Shao.fut.zer is selling some pills for those wanting to try a new one.
 
I'm still game for experimenting with a copper seat as I have eight extra QTC and three more in the mail. Thanks for the warning.:)
 
Something new:

Works real good, but i got accustomed to the folded seat because the activation got to a point that required a little bit less effort than a Surefire L1, just enough to make it perfectly comfortable to operate even with the middle finger holding the flashlight with the tip of the other fingers, really good, but that broke the QTC.

sassaquin, try this first and if you are not comfortable with this try the folded copper seat, it really makes activation of momentary very soft, but not too soft, just perfect, will keep finding a way to get that without breaking more QTC :D
 
Curt (hope you are reading this),

I have been looking at the QTC holder design, and the identation is to keep the pill in place and to relieve it a bit when its compressed, however there is a moment when the pill has had some use that the height between the top and bottom part are a bit loose for it, adding things into the identation enhances the risk of ruining the pill due to losing the depth to relieve the pill.

the good side effect to adding height to the pill is the operation is butter smooth and the ranges are a lot more manageable, i imagine it must be really difficult to tailor the pill holder since there must be quite a bit of tolerance in the QTC pill manufacturing, and that tolerance is bigger after some use.

would making the identation shallower but with more width and making a the edges of the identation with a slope and the bottom of the identation the exact shape and footprint of a QTC pill help on managing those tolerances and at the same time make horizontal space to relieve the pill? i will make a drawing of the idea and post it soon.

Another thing i have thought of doing is instead of adding things into the identation, is to sand the surface around the identation which would create the same effect but make more distance between the top and bottom of the holder, are there other side effects to doing this (like making the holder too loose and having a negative effect in the operation?) i would like to try this myself but dont want to ruin the holder, i can replace the QTC but cant replace a holder since i only have 2 one on my 17500 body and the other in the 123 one; and also dont want to void the guarantee.

**edit: here is a pic of what i was mentioning, would a shape like that work?, of course its more complicated to make than the round identation.

Bear in mind that the drawing has no measurements but aproximate proportions, lets assume its the same size as the current bottom part of the holder, the differences would be:

different shape of the identation, with the base with the same size as the footprint of a QTC pill, and the top is 0.5 mm wider (or what is needed for the QTC pill to expand horizontally under compression) creating a slope, also the identation itself should be shallower that the current one

I like that drawing, looks like it has potential. The slope is awesome. Very nice deduction you have going in this thread.

One thing I might add is to make sure the walls around the QTC are deep enough to prevent it from being over-compressed. I'm not sure what the exact maximum compression is, but I have damaged several QTC squares (as far as I can tell) by over-compressing them.

Experimented a bit more:


things i looked for:

-Make the QTC pill be more durable
-Smoother operation
-Less shifting

Was thinking about the hole and how it makes compression easier, problem is that makes the pills weaker, the holder does a great job at preventing other forces that are not compression but having thin parts in the material also makes it weak, thought about slicing off some height of the pill...

Flipped open my hollow grind knife and cut a pill´s height in half, i assume the pill now thinner is still more durable than with a hole, but cant tell for sure, that will have to be tested with more use; but another problem arised: lowest setting was a little bit higher, i could get a low low, but it was flaky, so i took another pill (man im really wasting these ones experimenting!) and sliced what seems to be a fourth or a fifth of the total height off (having a really sharp knife helps, also if you try this please be very careful or you will miss your fingerprints!:D), works great!, still has to use a copper seat to flush it between the top and bottom parts of the holder but now without the hole it seems to not shift (more contact surface, more traction), and i hope it resists more compressions than with the hole.

now its back to buttery smooth!, not as soft as to activate by accident of course but its back to being as soft as the SF L1, plus the Logan is better sized more versatile and with infinitely variable output!

Is there a flashlight of the year award?, if there were i think the Logan is a contender and definitely my favorite for the EDC category.
 
I sanded the surface of the bottom disk of the holder, the surface around the round identation for the QTC pill, hoping that would reduce jumpiness for 2 reasons:

-its possible that when debris gets in there it tilts the disks making direct contact to full (have been thinking if the disks had a little slope on that surface it would reduce that)

-it makes more height of the QTC pill available for compression (it might overcompress the QTC pill)

after sanding i noticed its made of brass and its plated, can anyone confirm this?

results were pretty much the same as before, seems i would need to sand more to get the effect or that i wont affect anything at all, and i dont want to sand more because that would make the lip that holds the bottom too thin.

it seems operation would be smoother if the 2 disks were stabilized better, like making the distance that holds the disk together tighter with the delrin part of the holder.

I still think the disk i drew could work well, specially if the identation height is reduced and the slope would stabilize and let the pill be compressed, wish i had the machines to try and make one (and the knowledge to use them! :D)
 
Ok, continuing the monologue...:D

I had to try one thing because the light became jumpier, but the good news is that it works, will not get excited as before because all the times i got excited about one later it gave problems.

i did slopes halfways in the edge of the identation, in other words tapered the edge of the identation, well more like murdered it because i dont have proper tools to do that but got the shape out of the small disk, and it works, it seems one of jumpiness biggest reasons is that the edges of the QTC material gets bitten, netprince kinda fixed it by making the QTC material not move by glueing it, but over time the pill gets off the glue and even in place it gets bitten over time, so, that fix works, but i needed a more durable fix, tapering the edge prevents biting, since the bottom of the identation remains the same size it still holds the QTC material in place kinda ok, also another bonus of the taper or sloped edges is that if theres debris coming from the QTC, they wont get trapped between the surfaces and make contact before the QTC square, preventing jumpiness from that too, another thing the taper fixes is that when the edge walls are straight they dont let the edges of the QTC square expand, promoting biting and also since during that compression the corners might bulge since they are the only part not expanding, making the output jump too.

Now i wish even more i could make the part i drew before, since this works good being so crudely made (believe me its not precise by any stretch, there are scratches everywhere on the edge), i can only imagine how a properly machined one would work. if you wonder what did i do, i just grabbed a dremel grinder bit and by hand ground the edges carefully, the result is not good looking but does the job, keep in mind im using a very used QTC pill that jumped a lot during operation so its a bit more proof that its working, also the square shape to hold it more steady is something i cant mod in an effective way in this pill part i modded so it could also help more to mantain the edges and smooth ramping.

If anyone can measure and CNC the part to improve the QTC operation please let me know.

Will report in a week if this fix holds up the test of time and me playing with it very frequently, so far its good and i have twisted and pushed the momentary a lot.

Nice, I've been tempted to grind the edges down on mine, but haven't gotten that far yet. Let us know how it works after a few days...
