Nice find. I never heard of the store before, but now I see they have one not terribly far away. A couple questions - did they have a lot of these in stock? And which store did you find them in? Is this a regularly carried item or more of a closeout/one-time offer?

DaveT, the store was in Hazleton Pa.. This appears to be a special purchase item as I haven’t seen them in stock before and they were labeled with some catch phrase like “extreme value”. There were probably twenty on a display table with some 1M CP spotlights at the same price. There are at least three stores in NE Pa., about two hours away from you.

I purchased one recently but paid the $19.99 price at another site. I find the little lantern serviceable but wouldn't necessarily call it super bright. Good enough to read by if close to the reader and will light up a tent or room sufficient so you can get around without any problems.
Bought mine for a hurricane item. I am presently building a hurricane bug out system that will also be useful here at home in case of extended power outages due to storms.
I have several flashlight but didn't have a serviceable lantern. This one should do nicely. Really didn't want to bother with the Coleman fuel lantern but I may buy a propane Coleman to replace the older liquid fuel lanterns expecially for outdoor use.

Got my lantern today. It's ok. Not going to light up a camp ground but will probably be ok in a tent. I don't think that it will be good for reading unless you are right next to the lantern. Good light for when the power goes off. Now if the power will just go off for a little while.

I've been looking high and low in Rite Aids for these, and my wife too, but to no avail. I already sent one to my parents during the hurricane season, and paid $19.99 at Overstock, with another $3 shipping, so $9.97 is great.
I went to the Nanuet store over the weekend, specifically to look for this thing, but I had called beforehand and confirmed they were in stock, "In the Menswear near the escalator." And there they were, with other junky schlocky last minute Dad presents piled in strategic places. They had a coupon for a mystery amount off each purchase, but turns out the coupon is not honored for "extra sale" items like the lantern.
Scored two for me, two for Wingerr, one for my godmother, one for a friend's cabin I'm visiting next month (no electricity, no plumbing) and one's going down under. There were still a half dozen left, but I got the nicer boxes.
I haven't seen one in action cuz I don't have the right AC adapter and I don't have enough D cells, but the build is nice and it's attractive looking, too. Not too small, but a workable size. (I'm thinking of those dinky Dorcy lanterns that run on AAs or Cs or something)

Two months and it still puts out usable light on low and can be turned up to brighten a room pretty good.
Battery voltage after two months continiousally on low (except for a few short excersions to high) is 1.18 Volts per battery.
These are new duracel batteries with an experation date of 2011.

Here's an update on the bunch I bought at Boscov. All lit up, all LEDs worked, they were mostly similar, perhaps here and there one might have been a little more yellow than the others, but certainly all were satisfactory.
One of them had a really loose switch, so it turned on quite easily. One could just swing it against the body, or bump something walking along and it would tip the switch into the on position. That one needs to be watched more carefully, as all the others had stiffer, harder to move switches. A little more work to turn, but won't come on unexpectedly.
As has been reported, the light output is OK, will light up a room fine, but it's hard to read by it unless you are really close. In real dark, like camping, you'll see just fine, of course it's no match for a propane lantern, for example, those are real bright. On the other hand, if you aren't lighting up a party in the woods, this little D battery job is great.
Nice at ten bucks!

Still going... Last night I noticed a little flicker when it was on the lowest setting so I turned it up a smigon. The flickering went away.
Will still turn up on high bright enought to light up a room pretty good. And the LOW level will allow navagation aroung a dark room if your eyes are adapted.

I dont have one of these lanterns but I have a 4led light adapted for nightlight use and find 3-5ma good enough to see in the dark like moonlight. At 5ma something runnning off new D cell alkalines with 18,000 mah could conceivably run 150 days or more possibly close to 6 months if run at 4ma and maybe 8 months at 3ma. I use batteries I have pulled out of stuff sitting around here for over a decade, heavy duty batteries that come with stuff after they get weak, etc and still haven't used them all up. Seems like I have an almost endless supply of nightlight batteries.
