Interesting tidbit related to medical/surgical headlamps

For anyone who's ever suffered through trying to find an inexpensive operating or dental headlamp, and i know there are at least a few of us:

and the author demonstrates something so obvious that I'm honestly ashamed for not realizing it long ago...rather than worrying about whether the lamp will be completely washed out by the overhead lights, just turn out the darn lights and let your eyes accomodate. Because the true purpose of the operating headlamp isn't more light, it's fewer shadows.

Believe it or not, as seen in the second link, the cheap china made cree headlamp is very usable in surgery all because of its excellent focus and high intensity, specially in situations where you cannot turn off the surgical light.
