IRIS remote controlled LED lamp

I was surprised to see this at my local "blue" DIY store. It has a wireless remote control circuit built into an LED lamp which is operated from a base unit located in the home.

What I don't get is this - why not just sell a wireless remote controlled screw-in socket adapter that will work with any bulb? If the Iris bulb burns out, you're throwing out the integrated 2-way radio as well as the bulb. It seems wasteful.

"IRIS" is a brand of home automation protocol that appears to be exclusive to Lowe's but when I looked up the Ultra IQ series of lamps on Sylvania's site, it mentions the ZigBee Home Automation protocol and a search on IRIS home automation revealed that it uses both ZigBee and Z-Wave.

This isn't the first time I've seen such a product though. There's the "Smarthome" LED bulb that runs on the "Insteon" protocol and, of course, the Philips "Hue" system. Google was also planning to enter the home automation market last year with an Android based protocol and worked with Lighting Science Group to make some enabled lamps but those have yet to been released.


You mentioned "why not make a screw in device that would work with any bulb". I figured there may be size issues ( I have an old X-10 device like you described and it adds about 3 inches to the attached bulb so it would stick out past the shade ) Not to mention if my dad or some unknowing person screwed a non-dimmable CFL into it .
