Is it worthwhile upgrading TK40 - TK41?

Guys,

a question for those who have both. Does 800 Lumens have that much more wow than 630?

Is it worth the upgrade?

Cheers...

It probably does but the tk40 has a nice white tint. Some of the tk41s are quite green

In my opinion it's not the amount of lumens between these two lights but more with the reflector design. The last two night's I've been walking the trails comparing my TK40, TK41 and TK50 and the TK41 is definitely my best performer for the trails, it has a beautiful balance between the TK50 and the TK40.

The TK40 serves as a great flood light due to it's reflector design using an orange peel texture and shorter reflector depth and the TK50 serves more of a spot light with it's smooth deep reflector that gives it a very narrow beam width which seems a bit too narrow for the trails. But when using the TK41 it was like damn, it lit up the whole width and length of the path, I was in awe with it's pattern of spill and beam width.

After using the TK41 it was hard to go back to using the TK50 but I was okay with the TK40. The reflector depth in the TK41 is just a bit shorter giving it a wider beam and the smooth to keep the throw there. I'm a satisfied camper with no green issue and contemplating on purchasing a second for the wife.

But there definitely ARE green ones out there so it IS a lottery. See the Fenix TK70, TK41, TK21 thread for green beamshots...I mean really green.

I have asked myself this same question concerning my TK30 (same as TK40 except for the batteries). I have made up my mind that I will need 1000 lumens or more before I purchase a light in this class.

It depends what your after really.

TK41 has both a brighter spill and a brighter hotspot (quite noticeable on both, but the spot is just much more intense, 18,000 lux compared to 55,000).

The hotspot on the TK40 is substantially bigger than the TK41, so if your not really trying to reach out there the TK40 may be better there.

The tint on my TK40 is much better (whiter) than that of my TK41 (a blue/purple), at least IMO.

So in short:

If you like throw, you should upgrade, if you like flood dont bother, if your tint fussy dont bother.

It also depends how much money you have too of course....

(and another reason for me, the switch on my TK40 was dying, and its my only large light)

Oh, heres something i missed (its finally nighttime here, and I only just got my TK41 today), the spill area (ie, total lighted area) in the TK41 is also significantly smaller than that of the TK40.

Ceiling bounce (at least in my room with my eyes) the TK41 is only just noticeably brighter than the TK40.

Thanks for your opinions and thoughts so far guys. I think I am going to wait and see what the TK60 is going to be like before i decide. I am concerned about the tint of the TK41 because i really enjoy the natural light of the TK40 over a cooler or green tint.

Oh, and 3 more things:

- TK41 no longer has beacon mode, which is very disappointing to me as its the only flashing mode I ever used and now its missing.
- Traction/grip on the TK41 is significantly better than the TK40.
- I prefer the UI to the TK41 by a long way, but wish i still had my beacon mode.

Ok, after having a TK-40 for just over a year... Received my TK-41 today... Now I have never been less than blown away by the TK-40, wspecially compared to every other handheld I have used or seen.. BUT..

The TK-41 is, in my opinion a FANTASTIC upgrade... that extra 170 lumens is VERY noticeable.. Mine has a smooth reflector (TK-40 had an OP one) and the throw on the 41 is MUCH further, the hotspot itself is also a lot brighter, and personally, I find the "tighter" beam to be better...

Not seen any evidence of "green" tint, but mine DEFINATELY has a blue/white (sort of HID 6000k colour) tint to it...

I know this thread is a little old but hopefully someone will be able to help me here.
I don't have either the TK40 or the TK41. I want to get one of them, but I'm not sure which to get as they are pretty much the same price. I actually have found the TK41 to be a bit cheaper. Is there a reason why the newer light would be a little cheaper?
They both look like great lights, but if you could only have one which one would you choose?
Thanks!
Shad

I've got both and if I could have only one it would be the TK41. It is much brighter and throws a lot further. It's not a laser beam like some say, it's got quite a halo of light around the hotspot.

That said, I'm keeping the TK40. It's a benchmark light, the first of it's kind, a history maker. I ten years when you can get a 2AA light punching out 500 lumens for 3 hours I'll be able to look at the TK40 and appreciate what it was and how it made me feel the first time I turned it on to turbo mode.

Well, it no longer matters if one is better than the other for me now as I just bought a TK40 from Marketplace.
I know it will blow all my other single and 2 AA lights out of the water regardless!
I can't wait for it to get here!

I have been shopping around for the TK-41 and it can be had for less than the Tk-40 like the previous posted noticed I wonder why.
