I popped out the piston of my d10 and the button didn't come with it. It appears to be broken. Is this supposed to happen or what? thanks in advance.

No, the piston should be one piece and not come apart. The dealer you bought it from should take care of you.

Who did you buy it from?

I bought it from 4sevens. I already had trouble with a previous d10 and he fixed me right up. I will contact him. Thank you Marduke.

David(4sevens) will definitley take care of you.:thumbsup:

@the OP,
YES, that's definitely broken.

@the gallery,
I can't help but to question the minimum wall thicknesses allowed in these Nitecore D10/EX10's? Every failure we see is due to fractures at the thinnest points. They are pushing the tolerances achievable by the manufacturer IMO. The troubling thing is that none of the failures I've noted were incurred as a result of abuse or anything approaching extreme service.

I'm trying to refrain from obsessing over it enough to disassemble my lights and measure them. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. It's comforting to know that 4Sevens will take care of it.

Wow. I havent seen this failure before. How the hell can that break like that? its one piece of machined plated steel isnt it? How could normal operation cause that to fracture like that? wierd!!!!!!!

Didn't Nitecore address this issue in newer lights? I would buy a D10 because the piston design is amazing, but reading threads about their lights falling apart is a turn off.

I've seen pictures of D10/EX10s with sheared off bodies numerous times in the past. But I think this is the first time I've actually seen the piston itself fall apart :eek:

Wow, looks like the wall can't take the stress. Hope this is a one-off incident...

For such a great light, I hope someone comes up with a titanium version. :takeit:

Boy as tempted as I have been to buy a Nitecore SmartPD light, I'm glad I went with Fenix. I was right on the fence a few months ago whether to get an EX10, or a P2D. After seeing all these catastrophic failures the Nitecores are having, especially without major abuse as mentioned earlier, looks like I made the right decision.

Maybe I'll spring for an EX10 in a few years after they work out the bugs (hopefully), but for now I'm very happy with my Fenix lights.

I own a D10, but I think I will upgrade to a Ra Clicky as soon as I can afford it (which will be in about 5 years :sick2: - couldn't even really 'afford' the D10 right now)

Nice light, but not built like a tank. OTOH, I'm quite careful, and incidents like this will most likely be covered even after the 1 year warranty period

The previous failure was the threaded areas splitting from excessively thin wall thickness. Yes they did address it with new builds, however older production batches remain in circulation. AFIAK, retailers did not purge/RMA old inventory.

I've read something to that effect, but personally I'm skeptical.
The reason I say that is because I doubt than any changes were done to the production run because these failures were fairly isolated and very likely the result of sloppy workmanship. What everyone has to realize is that these things are round and any lack of concentricy will result in a half-ing of the working tolerance creating VERY THIN wall thicknesses. For the person that commented about how this part could fail, notice where the fracture is, it is in the groove that holds the O-ring. Like anything mass produced you would hope that QC would catch things like that but lets be realistic, these Nitecore's are an incredible bargain for what you get and anything done different would drive up the price, so in my opinion this is not a big deal. That's what you have a warranty for.

They did upgrade/change the bezel ring on the Ex10 and I think the D10 has a thicker edge on the front edge of the head round the window area . For the threads and such I dont know for sure.......

IMHO, I think most brands, if not all, do have product failure at one point in time no matter how reputable they are. I did a quick search on one of the most respected brands to check if they have defective records, and they do too. Shan't name that brand to avoid touching on a sensitive subject :sweat:, but you know which :whistle:

Personally, what matters most is the problem isn't prevalent, NC constantly improves their product and addresses these defects promptly and effectively.

But having said that, this defect is indeed :shakehead :whoopin:

Wow this is a first we've heard of this specific problem. Yes, due to the tight tolerances, sometimes the raw parts are chucked into the cnc's lathes just slightly off and occasionally we get parts that are like this. Folks, don't worry if you don't have an issue, then it shouldn't crop up. If something does happen we we'll take care of you. I know there have been dozens of very very minor slient improvements over time. One example, notice the D10's now don't have a sharp triangular lip - it's more of a rectangle now :
