Hi Folks,
I've been looking for a new jacket recently, I've come across this jacket on the TAD website and I really like it, unfortunately, it's far too expensive for me to get.
Can anyone suggest a similar type of jacket and place (online) to buy it from?

Thanks

Ross

I know a guy who has the TAD jacket. Very nicely made, cool jacket. But I can't get by the price -- too much.

If what you're really looking for is a jacket with tons of pockets to hold gadgets, have you checked out www.scottevest.com ??? This is a gadget-lover's jacket rather than a tactical jacket ala the TAD. It's got way more pockets than the TAD, plus being able to route your cell phone or MP3 player earpiece wires through the conduits is very cool. I have one of the sport shells, and one of the version 2.5 jackets. My one complaint about the ScotteVest is that it's got a vest-style collar instead of a jacket-style collar.

Joe,

Thanks very much!! Thats pretty much exactly what I am after! They may be getting my money soon

I would suggest an M65 Field Jacket. In the winter I put the liner in and it keeps me pleny warm. Its a very durable coat with lots of pockets. Try to get an issued version rather than one of the many copies. The jackets come in black, green, woodland camo, and desert camo.

Alright, I just noticed that you're from Scotland so you might have objections to wearing US military clothing. I would still recommend this jacket to other people on this board.

Why do you think I may have objections to wearing US Military clothing? As a general rule, I dont wear ANY military clothing but that has nothing to do with my allegience to my country!
I was simply after a good jacket.

Shankus,
fine if you're treking to the north pole!! I've never been to Texas but I don't imagine that it gets *that* cold!!

Thanks for the suggestion

'nuff said.

No, probably not. But I have a thing for quality products, and overkill.

I checked out the Scott eVest, and it looks pretty cool. But no mention of is it warm, or just a functional pocket jacket. They didn't have them in my size in a lighter color. I would think if one wears it in summer, that khaki would be a good color to reflect as much sunlight as possible, without being white.

I had an e-vest for a short time, but returned it because it was too heavy when fully loaded (I just need a lighter computer). IE: my wife complained so I ended up going back to by backpack/briefcase. It was extremely well made and, probably would have made a decent two or three-season jacket for most climates. In western New York, it may have been a bit light weight for the dead of winter though.

I have a heavy bias toward all The North Face equipment. I have three of the jackets, they are expensive, but I don't know anyone that regretted buying one. I am from the South, but I like overkill too, I hate being cold.

One suggestion, something I did. Instead of dropping $400-500 on a big time Gore-Tex jacket, I bought a North Face Denali fleece jacket and coupled it with a North Face Hy-Vent rain jacket. A third the price and I have both rain protection and warmth. When I don't need the rain jacket I can put it in its own packable pocket and carry it in the fleece jacket. Has worked well so far.

I've seen the non-sport jacket reported on BladeForums
as a 3-season and the Sport as being a windbreaker.

I got one of the new soft-shell Marmots.
Did great all Winter, I like it because it's
good anywhere from 16 to 65F (For me).

I like it bacause I can just walk out the door,
No wondering will it rain or will it Snow.
If you don't know Oklahoma you have to understand
it can go from 50F to 85F in about 5 hours,
and back in another 3 hours!

Last year I used like 4 different jackets, This year only one!
(Inside and outside, In Snow and Sun) $350 well spent!

P.S. Get a hood /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This may just be me, but I noticed with goose down, that I can wear it in warmer weather without being hot. I can come inside from the cold and wear it pretty comfortably inside. But at the same time, it is very warm in cold weather.

Anyone else notice that?

I have noticed that down is fairly breathable, but I will tell you something nobody told me about it. I live in heavy humidity, it makes the hot seem hotter and cold seem colder. Down tends to clump in high humidity and loses a great deal of its insulating power.

I found this out after buying a high dollar goose down 0 degree rated bag and freezing in 20 degree weather. When in dryer climates (Utah) it worked perfectly. I use synthetic bag insulation and it works better for me, cheaper too. The main drawback is that it will not pack as small as down.

PS - You can't go wrong with a Marmot product either.

Howdy Bowser,
I have two more options for you, first, the Al Mar Tac Jac if it is still in production, lots of pockets and stuff or the Royal Robbins 511 vest which has multiple pockets including interior velcro lined pockets meant for holsters and mag holders extremely well made (I've tried on and coveted one for a while now) and comes in the UK familiar colors of black and tan! With accessory velcro pouches from Eagle Industries and Blackhawk Industries can be configured in a multitude of ways. Good luck.

Later,

Thanks folks, alot of research for me to do to find the best prices now!
All of your input is greatly appreciated

One of my very favorite jackets (and I've got some of the high-tech whoop-de-doo stuff) is the standard issue UK DPM field jacket. 7 pockets (including one on the sleeve and two HUGE internal pockets reached by zippers from the outside.) Quality material, good workmanship, even better (much as I hate to say it) than our own M65 field jacket. If you don't mind wearing camo - it's all the rage here - take a good look.

We can buy them cheaply here in the US, and I would hope in that you could in Scotland as well.

Just to keep things in perspective, the ScotteVest has 22 pockets, which run up, down, and behind the jacket. It's also got conduits up through the jacket, so you can keep your cellphone and mp3 player in any pocket, then run the wires up the conduits so the earbuds are little pockets right at your collar! Definitely a purpose-designed gadget jacket.

That said, I don't like the vest-style collar, my biggest complaint about the eVest.

That is the sort of thing I'm looking for. Things do get damm cold up here sometimes but not further than maybe -5 (Centigrade) so arctic jackets are not really needed.
It would be nice to have somewhere I could put my mobile phone / mp3 player etc & not have to mess about to much.
Having 22 pockets also means you could carry 22 flashlights

A Filson Cruiser would be a good choice for the winter--lots of pockets. I have one of the old (discontinued) whipcord versions, which is good for 3-seasons. They also make Cruisers in "Tin Cloth" (heavy wax-treated cotton duck) and "Shelter Cloth" (water resistant poly-cotton).
