I recently bought a Jetbeam RRT-0 XML to replace a Fenix PD31 in an effort to upgrade. I loved the idea of a max 550 lumen output with RCR123 batteries, and it's ability to use AA batteries as well. The problem is that the lights output with CR123 batteries (which is supposed to be 260 lumens) looks identical to my Fenix LD10 that is putting out 100 lumens. I've tested it at night both close up and about 30 yards, and the two are really indistinguishable. I understand that the RRT-0 is more floody, but am I expecting too much for my 260 lumen light to be brighter than my 100 lumen one? I guess I'm asking whether it's possible that I got a defective light. Should I try to replace it or just return it and find something else?

You should be able to tell the difference between 100 lumens and 260 lumens. Try a ceiling bounce test.

Go into a dark room. Turn on on your LD10 and point it at the ceiling. Then look at something on the floor. An object on the floor should only be illuminated by indrect reflections from the celing. Do the same thing with your RRT-0. I like to do this comparison by holding each light in hand while standing up. I keep both lights on, but have one pressed to my chest so no light gets out. Then I point one at the ceiling while looking at something on the floor around my feet. I fairly quickly alternate a few times between the lights.

Since the RRT-0 is putting out more lumens objects on the floor in the ceiling bounce test should appear noticeably brighter. If that's the case, then your RRT-0 is probably not defective.

Looking at the hotspots without a ceiling bounce test doesn't tell you which light is brighter whether you do it close up or 30' away. The LD10 uses a smaller emitter and has good throw for its size. Its hotspot might be as intense or even more intense than that of an XM-L light. while the hotspot on the XM-L should be considerably wider.

Should you return it? That's a subjective choice based on your personal needs and what you want out of your flashlight. If for your regular use, you can't tell the difference between the RRT-0 and an LD10, then you might as well just stick with the LD10.... it's smaller, probably has better battery life, uses cheaper batteries, and you save a $100 (assuming you can return the RRT-0 and get a full refund).

I too own a JB RRT-0 XML and I have asked many question about it vs. other lights and I am a bit disappointed with its stat sheet on paper compared to its actual performance. But i run it on RCR123s and 14500s (limiting the time I use it in turbo) and its perfect for me. It's AA and CR123 output isn't as bright as I'd like it to be, but it'll do until I'm done recharging my Li-ions for their next shift in the light. Being able to adjust the brightness with the control ring and use multiple battery types are the main reasons I bought it and I'm keeping it for those reasons. The Sunwayman V10R with extension is similar to the RRT-0, but since I have this light and it can theoretically go about 90 lumens higher than the V10R (550 vs 460) on rechargeable Li-ions, I like it. I had to ask myself how often I'd be needed all 550 lumens and truthfully, I can't see myself using turbo for more than a few minutes irl. Maybe to wow some of my non flashaholic friends but that's it. And if I needed 500+ lumens for an extended period of time, I'd keep the RRT-0 in my pocket and get a ZL SC600
