Just got my RC-G2 R5

It's brighter than the previous model and the beam is different . The spill is very bright almost evenly across the beam giving this light great peripheral reach .
I tested the throw and I get usable light out to about 250 feet .
The reflector is permanently attached to the bezel ring and the pill can be unscrewed from the reflector . The older model had the pill attached to the body tube so that you could unscrew the bezel and have a lantern style bare emitter flood lamp . The new model does not have this capability .
In short , great bang for the buck , impressive beam , and now my new favorite small light .

I just got mine today (Shiningbeam RC-G2 II R5). Compared it with my RC-G2 II Q5 and it doesn't look much brighter, if at all, but I'm running a Rayovac Platinum nimh in the R5 and a nickel zinc in the Q5, so that's probably the difference. Its hard to tell, even with ceiling bone because of the difference in tint, but it's supposed to be 48% brighter, and that isn't much of a difference to the eye (at least MY eye).

I haven't had time to switch it around and play with it much, except that it is brighter with the NiZn than nimh. Either of these needs a decent cell that will pump out some amperage for best performance.

Yes, the beam is broader (less intense spot) and it looks a bit cooler than the Q5. I'll use either one, I think -- but I still like my warm tint model better if I don't need as much light.

Whichever model, the G2 is great light and buy (and so are all my Romisens).

The Q5 has a max 114 Lm @350mA and Xp-G R5 has a Minimum 139Lm @350mA. If qwe assume both drivers are the same, you are ony going to get a 21%.

It should be brighter but thats in ideal conditions. Not worth the money. The
RMSEN RV-107 is only $9 and will be just as bright.O.k it's a AAA light.

I check a bit more out after my post last night. The R5 is definitely brighter with the nickel zinc -- but not by a huge amount, for what my eye sees. I'd go with Q5 for more throw, and R5 for more flood and more even lighting within 50 or 100 feet, though. The tints are pretty close between the two I have -- maybe the R5 is a little bit on the greenish side -- but that could be just the ones I have.

Did a quick current test and I got about (Rayovac Platinum and Genex nizn)
Q5 nimh 285 ma nizn 400 ma
R5 nimh 285 ma nizn 420 ma

Edit: BTW -- the Shining Beam rc-g2 II xx lights have forward clickies, the rv-107 I see listed has a reverse clicky with a Q3, or Q5 some dealers, and listed at 110 lumens; it's different category from the G2s, I think.

When I compared the R5 with the Q5 the throw was the same but the R5 had brighter spill . Both lights were tested with new lithium primaries . The OP reflector on the R5 does a good job of smoothing the beam . No artifacts of any kind and the greenish tint of the R5 is only noticable in a direct white wall comparison .

Might well be better with a larger hotspot. The G2 is one of those lights I have always wanted to like but have never succeeded in doing so. I've bought two of them and both were given away within a week.

It is just possible that with a floodier beam I'd like it more, but am not about to waste the money on a third one which is likely to be given away before the charge on the first cell in it gives out.

Lots of people do like this light but I've hated both the ones I've had.

Bulk - it is awkwardly shaped.
Beam - too narrow for most purposes.
The R5's floodier beam ought to help there.

I just can't get on with it.

I'm glad you do. Part of the fun is that everyone's tastes are different.

Like I said, I want to like the thing. So many people do that it must be doing a lot right.
