So tonight two of our kids that are in elementary school had an event called "Reading under the stars." The pamphlet the school sent home said "bring flashlights." So of course, I was all over that. :D Basically it was a bunch of parents listening to their kids read via flashlight out on the grass of the school after dark. I think our kids had a harder time deciding which one of my flashlights to use than they did picking out a book. In the end our son chose to use "his" own light, which is a Minimag, while our daughter chose a cheapy light I have that also doubles as an emergency light with several red flashing lights. With probably 60-80 flashlights around I didn't see ONE decent flashlight other than the ones I had on me (I brought 8 lights plus two for the kids). At one point where there was a break a bunch of kids were shining lights on a dark wall about 30 feet away. I couldn't resist and blasted the wall with my Fenix P3D. My light was about 1000 times brighter than the rest. :crackup:The second time I lit up the wall (for only about one second, didn't want to ruin the atmosphere) a guy had a massively shocked look on his face, like "What in the WORLD was that???"

When we got home I told my wife that I won the flashlight contest. She just laughed...

That's so awesome :twothumbs:devil:.
At first I was thinking, Why didn't you bring an HID, the Malkoff Quad, or one of Mac's customs? But since the lights were used to read books it makes sense why you didn't bring some insanely bright light. The P3D is a great choice for not attracting too much attention to yourself. Next time hopefully you'll have a UB2 Invicitus with you, hehehe.

"Reading under the stars." :sigh:

Well, around here, we currently have our OWN event:

"Freezing under the stars."

A powerful light, which gives off a LOTTA' HEAT, would be much admired. :candle:

Glad to hear you won First Prize !

Did anybody have a Laser Pointer ?

Any of the students interested in the Stars, Planets, and Constellations ?

Might have been a good opportunity to point out some things.

(no, i'm not jealous of Arizona. We might actually get above Freezing next week !)

:D

With a decent wind we did have to wear jackets, but it was not really that cold. As for the laser pointer, I did have one on me, but after telling the kids they cannot shine it at "people" they lost interest in it.

Hehe....that would be an event that I'd bring anything from my TW4 clones, to my Novatac, to my 8X or 8NX with my BMX80 drop in.

Heck - even my son would be hard pressed to choose from one of his River Rock flashlights or the "family use" Inova XO3's.

All would be giving out "holy crap" levels of light compared to most others.

"Reading under the stars." Sounds like fun.

This Saturday my son and I will be attending his first over-niter for Cub Scouts (he's a Tiger Cub). As I read down the short list of things to bring, I couldn't help but smile as I reached "Flashlight".

Unfortunately, like Burgess, we'll be lucky to be above freezing for the campfire. On the bright side, we'll be sleeping in old, primative cabins.

good school and I really like their way of teaching kids the joy of reading, I'll have to remember that.
and we're proud of you! good job ;)

Way to show everyone "the light"! I'm sure that Fenix P3D was more than enough light to wow the un-educated :twothumbs

Personally I'd have brought a Mag85, or maybe, Mag623.

Now your talking! But even a P3D is smaller than most "normal" lights around, and will sure beat them in output. Great story!

 Very cool story. If I knew of an upcoming event where other people would certainly have flashlights, I don't think I could resist bringing my ROP.

Me: "Excuse me sir, I noticed you have a 2D maglite, wanna compare?"

Hey KingGlamis, just make sure you don't let your kids mix high-powered lamp assemblies with the wrong type of rechargeable batteries...
