L4 with tritium

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

Since Surefires are made in the USA and Tritium is a controlled material, the likelihood of ever seeing this as an OEM product is slim and next to none.

Just guessing, but I suspect that a glow device on an L4 would be a very unwelcome addition for those customers interested in tactical usage.

where are the pics?!

i don't know how you would put a round tritium ring into the groove though..i'ts not like they stretch like an oring or rubber band...

Yeah, I see your point about tactical use. Still, many of those guys use tritium watches. Tritium is controlled? It's in many watches, gunsights and exit signs, why couldn't it be put in other items? Oh well, I personally need to find my lights in the dark. Can anyone recommend a very long lasting brand of glow paint or sheeting?

Gman,

There were many posts about various glow powders and substances quite a while back. Search under "glow" All Forums and all posts.

Rothrandir: check your mail. I'm not set for pix here.
Brightnorm: thanks...my bad, should have checked first.

Since tritium is typically contained in a small glass tube in watches and protected behind the watch's crystal, it's hard to see how this might be applied as a ring on a flashlight... unless maybe it was inside the light's bezel behind the lens.

Like you said, painting that groove with glowpowder would be another alternative, and probably better as it won't break. Read up on stronium allumate. The stuff is suposdidly wicked bright and glows for 12 hours. You could use the dusting technique to build up a lot and then seal it up.

Cool fission light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

You're right but they make them in semi-circles.

Nice work Gman!
A light could be made / modified with the small tritium tubes used in the watches and night sights. I do believe Tektite put a tritium bead in one of it's flashlights, embedded in the body?. At one point I was going to make a lanyard for one of my lights that had some tritium shotgun beads attached. Never got around to it.

thanks bert /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

very nice indeed! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tritium isn't allowed in the U.S. for "novelty" items such as glowrings, but is allowed for things like watches, gun sights, etc. A while back you could order autos from Microtech with tritium dots on the buttons, but they no longer do that. I don't know if they stopped because of regulations or because it was a hassle. If they only stopped because it was a hassle, then I'd say the tritium would be allowed in this application which I see as being the same thing as the dot on the auto button.

Looks really good--too bad I can guarantee that if my light had one it would break soon after it was installed (I can be a bit of a klutz).

"How well would a Tritium ring handle the heat in that groove on the L4 head?"

They are very good at cold but I don't think they are recommended above 70%. Edit I mean deg. Celcius.

Like Quickbeam said, Tritium is controlled in the USA only above certain amounts in a vial. The amount found in a standard glowring is too much, thus they're not supposed to be sold here.

Well, Glow Rings are sold here anyway, and I don't think the NRC hunts down people who buy or sell them. They are considered to be a "no-no" though (imitating the NRC wagging a forefinger at people who have them), so you won't find that many of them around here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
