so looking through the forum a number of the larger mods such as "the torch" and the massive 4000 lumen mag lite mods are done in the 2d body

now is there a reason there are not any like 10,000 lumen mods using a 6d body is it heat or something or simply price and performance issues or are the bulbs simply not able to keep up?

i would simply love to see a massive mag lite mod that's absolutely insane even if its impractical to use from what i read the Osram Sylvania EVA 64623 HLX is the largest one i have seen any higher lumen flashlights on the forum.

if i am totally wrong please tell me right away as you can tell i am a total n00b at this but i would love to get involved in this.
 
i think the main problem is about the batteries being able or not to take big current drain rates and fitting those into the flashlight,also the switch and other parts that have to be modified to be able to take up the heat...about massive output,maybe youshould just take a look at the USL:)..lol
 
The challenge of striking a harmony between power source and lamp in a flashlight form increases with power. Unlike most electrical devices that are familiar, the engine in a flashlight producing the result is, by design, the weakest part of the circuit. The device is trying to destroy itself.

Due to the sag the batteries experience in higher watt systems the batteries have to have the capacity to overcome sag. To overcome sag, often the batteries will hit the filament with much more current than is required to actually run it well. Filaments are unhappy about this.

I asked this question a while back myself and that simple answer is more lumens = more heat. Current isn't really an issue as 10-12 amps is about as high as you need and most RC cells can easily handle that without much sag at all, some cells claiming 1.2v at 30A.
Mac built a 10000 lumen light in this thread: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=116408 but even this unit built using the wider FM body and huge FM 3.5" finned head that has a great chunk of metal for heat disspation got so hot that it could only be used for 15 second intervals.
There is also the Larryk12 with in the order of 14000 lumens using a harbour freight spotlight body that is much more practical in terms of heat but run time is short due to very high current at high voltage needing lots of cells
 
My experience with several different ROP configurations and several other hotwire 3D Mags is what missionaryman stated: heat is one of the most important factors. As I see things, at about 300 torch lumens (such as a low ROP....) heat is not that big of a deal. But as you increase to higher levels, such as 500 torch lumens, heat does come into play.

I use the KIU sockets, FM battery holders, FM reflectors with heatsink, finned heads, and still heat is an issue. Examples, Mag610 with HD: runtimes of about 3 min. or more really put out the heat. If I use the Osram 62138 100W bulb, I do not run it more than 2 min. at a time.

Just for the heck of it, using 12aa's in direct drive mode, I put in an Osram 64633 150W bulb, under-driven. For about 2 or 3 min., with CBP 1650s, I estimate I get torch lumens > 3100 when the batteries are putting out 1.2V each, or about 14.4V for the pack. (For a while, perhaps during the first minute, I estimate that torch lumens are close to 4,000.) Of course when voltage sag kicks in, the light is putting out smaller lumen numbers. But, I guarantee you that you do not want to run this beast for more than 1 minute at a time. It gets too hot to hold. I can only imagine how much heat would come out if I ran this bulb with more than 12 batteries!
