My son wants a good laser pointer. He has seen one that is the size of a pen, uses 3 batteries, and is made in Germany. Anyone know anything about these?

Does he want a red or green pointer/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif. Most of us here are hooked on greenies, bit more expensive, but a lot more cooler. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif
 
In looking at what is available, I note that most or maybe all use 2 AAA batteries. He may be incorrect. It was one he found in LA, and he bought it for the CEO. It was the only one they had. He is researching to find what it was.

He was not aware of green. I mentioned it to him. Maybe he will decide that is what he wants. He wants one for Christmas, and so cost in not a factor since I assume we are not talking about several hundred dollars. I think they must run in the $200 range.

Thanks for the help. I wish I could see a greenie, but I do not know anyone who has one.

Green is what you want. First green just looks different. Second is that green is much more visible simply because the human eye can see green better. This means with green you can see the spot from further away and also you are more likly to see the beam.

Power is important. 5mw or less is fairly safe to shine in the eye for short periods. More powerful and you can blind some one or yourself. This becomes very important if someone is carelessly using the laser and points it at something shiny like a chrome bumper, or a window (reflection).

So I would recomend you start with 5mw power level in green.

Since I am almost totally ignorant of laser pointers, are there different models of Leadlight?
I looked on eBay, and I could not determine if all the Leadlight pointers were the same except for color of the case.

Are there any that are good that operate on AAAA or N cell batteries? That would make them a little smaller in diameter than the AAA battery pointers.

Has there been a test of pointers such as flashlights?

OK,Jerry. you will definetly want to check out craigs page, www.ledmuseum.org . He has done a few reviews, on diffrent lasers, its a nice place to start.
There are 2 types of standard leadlights <1mW (UK standard) and <5mW (US Standard). You will want at least a 5mW. I'm assuming here your sone is actually an adult?, so he can actually handle something with a bit more power, just going off the CEO part you brought up before. (unless he is going to use it for pointing to projectors etc, mods will be too bright for that. After your standard pointer comes those that are Modified to produce more power. ( i'll include arnold belands lasers in this section, even though he will totally despise it) The 2 leading laser sellers on the net are Arnold Beland www.abeland1.com and Chris Tao www.wicked lasers, they both sell standard and high powered lasers. They both sell on ebay as well. Arnolds high powered lasers are supposed to be unmodified and have greater power due to better quality MCA's. Chris modifies his but keeps the current low as well, but this is because he modifies the ones with better MCA's, hence he can offer more power. I have dealt with both, and i recomend Wicked.

As for batteries, i dont know about aaaa, but i know some greenies that run on N size batteries, but the quality just isnt as good as the leadlight.
 
get a pen style green laser pointer for ~$100 USD,
for higher quality ones, buy them <200 USD from chris or arnold. . simple as that . . it will definitely make a great gift . .
 
Thanks, DaFiend and all. There is a lot of info here. My son is 43 so not a child.
He is not knowledgeable in laser pointers, but as he has to brief fairly often he wanted one. He does not know about green lasers, and will use it inside in relatively small rooms.

He said the one he wants is about the size of a pen both in length and diameter. It is chrome finished, or steel, and has a laser on one end and a pen on the other. He thinks it was made in Germany, but not sure.
I have seen some, and am trying to learn where they are made. If he is thinking German quality, and gets a "Made in China" item he may be disappointed.

It appears that the ones which fit the size requirement will use N or similar batteries. I am not sure that he knows how expensive they are, or how long they will last.

I'll research those sites.

This is going off topic a little, i'll get it back on track don't worry, but you know what i hate? When someone steals your pen, even worse, your laser. Worse than that, your laser pen.

Jokes aside, i don't normally recomend Z-Bolt, but check them out, they have 3 types of laser pen and free engraving on some of them aswell!

On my website, I have the Infiniter Quad XP-4 and the 3-in-1 LED/Laser/Pen.
I'm guessing you'll want the Infiniter product, since Infiniter is a good brand name.

Might I suggest you get him the Pen as noted above and also get him a Green laser. You could get both for $100. I expect that he has never had a green one and it really is different and special. Plus it appears much brighter. I think he might actually play with the green one more.

Does any one else second this thought?
 
I think I know what you are talking about. the cheap version I have found at severl gas stations. 4.99, runns on 4 buttin cells, and looks just like a regular pen, in size and length. The few I got are OK. after extensive use the pen died in one and the pen twisting mechinism in one of the others died. That said...
GREEN RULES. sure to get attention at a presentation, but actually might be too bright on an overhead board.
