Ok after looking through this list I feel I need to better explain my reasoning and what I'm looking for. I want a full size light that I can use on traffic stops while working. I'd also like it to have multiple levels so I can use it to read paperwork etc on the side of the road and be able to light up a field or areas around a house. Because I live on a budget I'd like to keep it under $100 if I can. I'd like the possibility to recharge batteries and I want it full size about 12" long to use as a last resort defense if needed in a split second. Any suggestions? I was contemplating the Coast HP17 but I'm just not sure about it...
 
The 'new' streamlight SL 20L with 350 lumen, 60K candela LED is a good choice (aluminum body not the polymer). High, med, low, and strobe... And works with all the older chargers.... Not as heavy as the old SL 20 I had 18 years ago, but still can be used as a impact tool if you cannot transition to your baton. Average price 110 bucks.. Also no memory so it will default to high after being turned off

Well I was looking at that as a viable option just trying to see what else might be out there... But I appreciate the info. I saw the thread about the 1000 max lumen mag light mod that has the multi setting option. How hard would this be to do with a 3d mag? I've never done something that in depth with modifying but it doesn't look too difficult. Is it a better option to buy the parts and do myself?
 
The easiest would be to get a drop-in. Malkoff ones are the best from what I hear, but they require a bit more work then most. Single mode though.


For 1000+ out the front lumen, you'll need a bit more work then a normal maglite mod, and you'll end up with less throw.

Most of the lights here are small then the Maglites, some even fit comfortably inside the battery tube.

The Fenix TK41 (8 AA batteries) and TK60 (4D cells) could work for you.

The mod I was looking at was by jayrob and if I'm not mistaken I saw that he can do it to have multiple modes?
 
The modes are dependent on the driver used. If you have a 3D mag, there are a few drivers you can use. I modded my 3D a few months back with a driver with 8x AMC7135 chips, a Cree XM-L, and a Maglite heatsink. Illumination supply, Shiningbeam, and many other sites all have this driver and LEDs. The heatsinks you can find in the custom buy sell trade section.

The driver I used has 3 modes as well, but the modes are controlled by the same on/off switch, so signaling will cause the mode to switch. I'd prefer at least a driver with no memory.

The mode itself is fairly easy. A few cutting steps, a few solder points, and some application of thermal glue/paste.
