Leaking NIMH\'s ?

I wonder if NIMH's (AA size 1,2 V) are leaking like normal AA's 1,5 V when they get empty or warm ?
I searched and didn't find a thread regarding this.

The reason for my question is this: For a backup light in the house, would it be sufficient to use a 4-AA LED light with NIMH's or would it be better to use a lithium-powered one ?

I'm aware that the NIMH's do loose some power during prolonged storage, though.

i found that 25% of the green china cheapies leak and go bad
they leak even if you leave them in the carton unused.
otherwise it takes abuse to make nimh leak.

Hello AbsoLite,

Snakebite said it well.

As far as using NiMh in a back up light, as long as you remember to cycle the cells and recharge them every 4 months or so, they should work fine.

I keep alkaline or lithium cells in my back up lights and use rechargeable cells in the lights I use often. I find this system works well for me.

Re: Leaking NIMH\'s ?

I guess I've been lucky. I've never had a NiMH leak. I use about 20 generic cells daily, along with a few branded ones. I have 14 generics that are in those somewhat silly solar powered yard lights. They've been charged and discharged daily for over two years in temperatures from below zero F to 100 F. They are all still working, though they may have lost some capacity. Considering they are no doubt being charged with a very dumb charger, it would be surprising if they didn't lose some capacity.
