I use a cree r2 led in my flashlights and was looking to upgrade them to a better version. Is there a guide to the pros and cons or each led on the market that a normal person can understand?
 
to be completely correct, You are not using a "Cree R2" led, but a led from Cree in the output class "R2", the model itself is critical for an upgrade
(I would think it will be an XR-E)

as to "upgrading" ... one can swap led to newer versions, but in reality there wont be much seeable difference, if there is no real difference in the led.
Say upgrading from a Luxeon to a Cree XR-E, maybe also from an XR-E to the newest XP-G/XM-L, that could be some difference.
But there the construction based specialities of the led itself might make much more difference, than the increased output might be.
At least its some project to start modding.
