Hi,
Sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place, I would like some help with a circuit.
I have a dive torch that uses what i think is a reed switch that is spring loaded. you push it forward to turn it on then forward again to turn it off. (the switch springs back to its original posistion).
How do i build the circuit so that the switch works how it used to?
LED - Seoul P7 (3.7v @ 2.8 amps)
Battery source - 4 x AA 6v

If you gave some more information about yourself it might help readers to frame a suitable response:

  • What kind of light is it, how much free space is available inside it and how did it work before it was modified?
  • How is the P7 going to be driven?
  • What kind of experience do you have with electronics and circuit construction?
  • Are you looking for off-the-shelf components, or would you be considering a home brew circuit design?

Hi Mr Happy,
  • Its a dive light, not a lot of space in the head, it use to use a driver that consisted of a transistor looks like a mosfet, resistor, also one of them little black domes that is used for sound, the original led was a luxeon 3 running at 1000ma i think, reed switch..I can post pics of the circuit if needed?
  • It will hopefully be driven using some sort of regulation/driver
  • Not a great deal of experiance, but enough to get by with the basics
  • Off the shelf would be nice.

I goggled 'dive light' and I'm shocked that there are dozens of different
shapes and styles from numerous manufacturers. Which brand and model
number are you modifying?

Since it used a Lux III, the simplest upgrade is to simply swap it for a SSC P4-U2 for over double the output with no change in brightness. Using NiMH rechargable cells will give you "pseudo regulation".

Dam it, i thought i was the only person with a dive light. Looks like i've been had over..
Its a northern diver Fusion-X.
Ive already swapped out the luxeon and replaced it with a Cree R5 on both my buddies northern diver fusion-X torches. Hes more than happy with them being twice as bright than they were.
There is only about 3cm circular space 8mm deep in the head for a driver...

I have put a Seoul P4 U1 in place of the Lux3, a useful upgrade.

Its a nice back-up light and has good heatsinking, a solid alloy slug contacting the metal head 35mm reflector
I did not try a Cree as it has a smooth reflector and has even some slight artifacts with a Seuol.

If you want to run the light with a P7, first you will have to open up the reflector to get the P7 in the focus point, if you do this you will probably have to lift the LED on a small pedestal, or you may be able to move the heat sink, but I dont think so.
dont forget that simply using the P7 at 1amp will give 330+ Lumen compared to 230 from CreeQ5 (and 210 from my P4)

The AA's are also a concern, I would do a search here for "eneloop" rechargables as other batteries Duracell and NiMh re-chargables will not like the current draw, ie a 2700mah NiMh cell discharged at 2.7amps (2700ma) will not last an hour more like 30-40 mins. The labeled capacity of an eneloop may be lower but you will get much more usable power out of it at high current draws.

The expensive answer is to get a TaskLED HIPFlex.
