LED color variation

Could someone explain why LEDs are not a consistant color?
Arc says that the brightest ones are used for their Premium series but indicates that all apparently have to be checked.

If a company offers a premium or select series for a higher price, do they also drop the price of their regular lights? Doesn't seem fair if they don't, because all the best LEDs will have been picked out for the select series. At least before they offered these select lights, there was a chance of getting a really great LED in their regular flashlight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif
