LED ID Help please!

i need some help ID'n this LED. i know it's a CREE, and i Think it say XM-R2 on the back but it's hard to see. if ANYONE can give me some specs on this led i'd appreciate it greatly, i'm thinking about moding to a warm white. the driver seems to be just a simple resistor on the board underneath and perhaps more in the tailcap with the clicky, since thats where the dim/high/strobe functions come from using a MM.

That is a Cree XP-E. Nice board, too. XP-G has the same package size, but a larger die, meaning the result would be a larger hotspot.
 
well, after further examination, i found on the back "XPE-R2". i have no idea of the specs of this led. fv, wattage, ect. if anyone can fill me in, please do. i have 4 flashlights with these in them. i'd modded 1 with GITD around the led and today when i removed the epoxy from it, the dome came off (was kinda expecting that) BUT when i fired it up again, i was expecting it to be in the blue/near UV are BUT Much to my surprise, it was actually a MUCH warmer white the it was originally. any ideas as to why?
i'm thinking of parting 1 of these leds and using it in my Stanley HID. in the original light it had the LED dome and then a "parabolic?" reflector. with out the dome, the beam now has a large center blank area when used with the reflector. do these LEDs work well with lenses, even without the dome? will they work with lenses with the dome? i'm sorry if these questions seem amateurish, i'm an electronics and HID guy, but know little more than the basics when it comes to modern LEDs.

R2 is supposed to designate what output bin the LED was sorted into. R2 is pretty high up in their offerings, you can see what bins the XP-E is offered in on the datasheet (http://www.cree.com/products/pdf/XLampXP-E.pdf).
LEDs do weird things without domes. One of mine turned greenish gray.
The LED dome is there to aid extraction of light and to protect the LED die. Any damage to the dome causes inefficiency in the optical path. Think about how if you shine a light at a piece of glass, directly at it, most of the light goes through, but when you shine it at a sharp angle, more light reflects off of the glass instead of going through. The dome ensures that most of the light that escapes from the phosphor is able to make it out instead of being reflected back and wasted.

It will still work just fine with lenses and reflectors, but the beam will just not be as smooth, since most likely there is still a few, uneven pieces of silicone dome on top of the die. An aspheric lens will take an image at its focal point and throw that image downrange. If you put the LED at the focal point of the lens, it will project the picture of that LED downrange. If the LED looks funny, or doesn't have a dome, the lens will still project an image downrange, of a funny looking LED.

With your reflector that makes a doughnut, try moving the LED further into the reflector. You want the image of the little yellow die to be right where the arc was sitting originally. Although, I'd recommend just getting another HID bulb. They make relatively cheap "55W" automotive kits. Usually only about 40-45W output on the ballast, but higher than 35W.
 
AH, ok.... so led - dome = weird led light. lol
i hadent planned on taking the HID out of my stanley, just replacing the 3 little leds with something with a lil more kick and thought maybe these XPE-R2's would do the trick. i just donno how they will behave w/out a reflector but using the stock aspheric lenses on the Stanley led spot.

I think your main concern will be either heatsinking the LEDs, or underdriving them enough that they don't need heatsinking.

I've been keeping an eye out for a stanley HID for a long time. We even had 2 new walmarts open by where I live. Only halogens :-(
 
i bought the last one from our walleworld last Feb and haven't seen one since. i've been tinkering with mine for some time now, swapped out the blue 5mm LEDs for RS brand warmer whites. then for x-mas i bought my son the 5w stanley LED spotlight (cause he loves play'n @ night w/daddy) and was looking at the led in his and pondering replacing the 3 5mm in the stanley with @least 1 good LED or even all 3 with atleast the xpe's types i have in my EDC's.
i KNOW you can get them online easily enough, just look on ebay for them. but be certain that you will probably be replacing the SLA in it.
i'm actually working on "Project SASy" (Short Arc Stanley) ;) i have the new parabolic and a 75w SA bulb, now looking into ballasts and mounting ideas. (imagine a stanley with 75 watts of Short Arc Power! teeheehee)
but for now, tinkering is all that the wallet will allow, lol.
don't get me wrong, i love the Stanley as is, but can always be better!. i think they had a good idea, but diden't plan everything thru or test fully before putting them into the market.

well, i guess i'm off to test how the parabolics fit with the stock lenses. wish me luck! i'll post pix afterwards. :)
 
Hah, oddly enough, I was about to recommend just getting some of the radiohut LEDs or a "55W" automotive kit, but short arc, mmmmm

update, the XPE-R2 upgrade was a failure, not enough wattage to the orig board, and while try'n to get a measurement i accidentally shorted a resistor and :poof: went the XPE... may it RIP. will eventually make own copper board and driver and plop a 10 watter in there :devil:
 
D'oh! Sorry to hear that! Could it be just the driver died and the LED is still ok? I'll cross my fingers for ya.
 
nope, phosphor is Black and cracked.... toasted :( these things happen, one of the drawbacks of having a toddler in the house while not having a proper work space thats out of kids reach. (he bumped my arm and *zap*sparks*smoke*and the familiar ozone/fried silicon odor*) que sera sera, will try again at some point. just glad i was able to repair the damage to the driver and get the original 5mm's to work again.
