Hi guys, i dunno if this is the right forum for this topic, but looking at the possibility of LED and its long life and bright output, does there exist a LED alternative to normal house lights?, i am not electrically minded , can anyone tell if this is possible,
would save on power for the house, as LED draws very little power?

Here's the present state of the art:

....The best white LEDs on the market emit 25 lm/W, which is almost twice as efficient as an equivalent tungsten-filament light bulb, but barely a third as good as a fluorescent tube. To become competitive, the devices need to reach 80 lm/W. To rule the world, 150 lm/W is probably required. If progress continues at the rate of the past 30 years, this will be reached by 2010. That is a big if, but the efficiency of blue and UVLEDs should improve dramatically as better ways are found to build them.

I have seen where some people have put epoxy resin into the LED and have reported a wider spread of light, lets assume the usage of a Luxeon 5W, in an epoxy resin half dome, could throw out a soft glow, say good enough for bed side table lamp?

Hi Roguesw:

I did a lot of research to see if the 20 unit condo complex I live in could benefit from LED lighting technology. The answer in short is not right now. LED light bulbs aren't ready for prime time yet. We did switch to compact fluorescent bulbs in all our common areas and are saving quite a bit off our electric bill every month. I'm also using a new reflector bulb from GE called a Genura in our lobby and elevator area. These bulbs put out about 75 watts of light for about 23 watts of electricity. They use radio waves instead of a standard filament and will just go dim when they reach the end of their life. So far the bulbs have been on 24/7 for about 18 months now and are just as bright as the day I installed them! I got them off eBay for about 16 bucks apiece but the standard retail is about twice that.
 
Hmmm, it seems there is more to filament technology in terms of consumer housewares than exist in flashlight technology,
i will just keep on trucking with the old energy savers
