Ive been thinking about buying a tektite trek 6000 led flashlight. It has 60 white leds. The price is way out there and Im not sure that it is brighter than my HID scubalight. Anyone out there have any experience with a flashight with this many leds. I know they are more durable and the batteries last longer, but how about the power?

Without knowing more about your HID scubalight its hard to say for sure, but I believe it is extremely unlikely that the 60 LED light would be anywhere near as bright as a HID light. Not even in the same class of brightness, I'd say.

60 white LEDs will give a pretty good area light, but highly doubtful it will come anywhere near the power of a HID.

The HID light - would that be a UKE Light Cannon? I`ve one of those and loads of LED lights (no Tektite 6000 though) and although I`ve never been diving, I would expect the LC to be a much better performer. LEDs emit a similar colour of light but the beam dispersion is very wide. Also, the LEDs the Tektite light uses can only really put out about a lumen of light each so that`s 60 lumens total. Might be more, it depends on how hard they`re driven. The LC100 - or any small halide lamp - will give over 400!

I think you`ve got a decent light there as it is. The biggest advantage of the Tek6000 that I can see is the inherant durability. Everyone keeps saying miniature halide lamps are quite fragile, but you could throw a LED array off a mountain and it would probably survive.
It`s also small and quite light - I have its incandescent brother and was surprised at how small it was.

The HID will be much brighter. I'd look at picking up a smaller backup LED light.

99% of my night diving is done in the spring and once I get where I want I turn the lights out.
Then I just cruise looking for *real* glo-skin.
