I know regarding dive lights there is frequently a debate regarding LED vs HID lights, particularly with regard to penetrating power.
Many people comment that LED's aren't quite there or perhaps that they are there if the comparison is a 10 W HID but not for a 21 W HID.
Is this essentially due to the fact that the highest surface brightness is still found in the XR-E R2 and therefore this probably equates to the brightness in the very center of a 10 W HID. For LED's to penetrate as far as a 21 W HID the surface brightness will have to be just as great but all current improvements in LED's come from larger die sizes and therefore increases come in lumen output but not lux readings.
Is this the issue in a nut shell?
