Has there been any show aired that tells how LED's are made? Do you guys know of any links or videos where I can see the process? The newer the better. :)

I did a search, but didn't come up with anything.

You know, I've been wanting to suggest to that show "How It's Made" that they should do a segment on LEDs. They already did one for fluorescent tubes. They may have done one for incandescent lamps also (if they did, I don't remember seeing it). Although I more or less know how LEDs are made, actually watching the process would be really interesting.

I think most LED production is done in a clean room and having a camera setup to film the process may not be the easiest possible thing. Also the entire die is made in a single process done within a high temp chamber.

Well they did one with IBM microprocessors, so I don't think the clean room will be a huge issue. They only covered assembly of the indiviual components(pins, substrate, die, surface mount components) , not the raw silicon itself, but interesting to see how they're put together.

They did do one for incans. It was really interesting. Amazing how much work goes into one bulb. Especially considering the price they're sold at.

I once heard an anecdote about a film team in a cleanroom... they had full bunnysuits, cameras where packaged really good... and yet the yield rate fell down to almost 0 after they filmed in there. But as I said, 'anecdote', so no source.
Even if it is just a legend - I'm sure it has still some truth in it, namely that permits for filming in a clean room are probably quite hard to get, as the costs of a contamination brought in by a careless filmmaker could be very high.
