Less lumens!!

This is just based on my observation, but it's only my cool emitters that seem obnoxious to me. My neutral and warm emitters give off plenty of glow but don't make me flinch looking at them. Based on my experience I suggest you try any emitter that's neutral to warm. My Zebralight SC51 is particularly good in its low modes and the color of its light is great. It's become my EDC.

As someone on this board has mentioned,
anything that will make your pupils shrink is considered wasted lumens.

I see them as clutches. First you needed light to see. Then you whipped out a 700 lumen light and thought "Oh great! This is what I needed" so you turn it on with confidence and due to the shear output you may squint awhile, but eventually your eyes will compensate for the extra lumens. After your eyes have adjusted you start developing tunnel vision because everything in the surrounding appears black and you can't see anything without the light. You become very dependent on the light just like a crippled man needing his clutches. At this point, tunnel vision sets in so great that even when a shadow moves on either side of you you will not notice as long as it is out of the beam. That is why I hardly walk around with full on output but chose something in the range of 30 lumen max for trekking.
