Li-poly batteries?

check this out this is a new technology to me...
this will change the way I fly RC stuff... I'm a big E-flight and E-sailplane flyer/

seem adaptable to Light engines... what do the individual cells look like?

What you see ARE the individual cells. The advantage of a Lithium Polymer cell is that they are flat, and can come in nearly any shape.

In the link that you provided, the top picture is one cell. I suspect that the batteries shown below are just stacking more and more cells on top of each other.

I believe that the chemistry is similar to a standard Lithium Ion battery. The advantage is that the cells can be much thinner. This means that in a PDA, the battery could be the size of the entire back of the PDA, so that it can be thinner.

If you look at the page you provided in your link, you will see the individual cells. They are the first entry in each cell capacity category (the first picture in the 340 mAH cell is the single cell).
 
I don't think so. They are also horrendously expensive, potentially dangerous (as are all lithium batteries) and require a special charger. The electrode designs are similiar to prismatic cells so I imagine it would be possible to make them cylindrical but I've heard nothing about that. They seem to take heavy current abuse better than li-ion.

Batteries usually consist of a couple of sheets of metal with wet paper between. These are then rolled into a round shape and canned. I know that NiCads are constructed like this, and I suspect that NiMH and LiIon cells are made the same way

The thing about Lithium Polymer cells that makes them unique is that you do not have to make them cylindrical. IF you use a cylindrical battery, your product cannot be thinner than the battery. If you use a Lithium Polymer, then you can make it as flat as you want, as long as it has room to "spread out."

So, the short answer is that a cylindrical Lithium Polymer battery is called a Lithium Ion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's not right. They are two different beasts. For example, Panasonic, one of the largest manufacturers of Li-Ions makes cylindrical and prismatic (deck of cards) li-ion cells. Their prismatic Li-Ions are not stackable. They do not make li-poly.

OK. Yes, they ARE diffeent on the INSIDE. I said that the chemistries are similar, but not the same.

From the outside, the only important difference is the shape...
