Was wandering through WalMart today and found this on clearance ($15). I'd seen it before, but had resisted. I don't exactly need another lantern or radio, but put them together on sale. I think I'll hide it from the wife.

It's kind of big. 11 inches tall and 3 inches wide. It's got 9 main LEDs, 6 reds that only flash, and one single that they call a "night light" on the front with a separate switch. You can turn on 3 or 9 from the main group, or have them flash along with the reds. There's an AM/FM radio with a telescoping antenna, a compass built in the top, and the night light switch also has a "siren" position. There's a jack for cell phone charging and one for MP3 input.

You guessed it. It's a crank-up gizmo. They claim 45 min. of light for 1 min. of cranking. I realize the mechanism and the internal batteries may not last long, but it does have the option of using 3 AAA batteries.

It's not complete junk. Everything seems to work at about the level you'd expect. There's a fair amount of glare, but that should be fixable. The radio actually has okay reception and tuning. You have to go to a web site to get a free cell phone adapter, and pay for shipping, so I probably won't be trying that feature. The MP3 output feature works fine, but, of course, the speaker isn't the greatest.

Geoff

P.S. There were a few other LED lanterns I hadn't seen before.
