At the end, he fires a flash, and that's how he appears behind the long shutter image of the light trails.

Ah, brings back some memories... I did some similar shots some years ago with a friend of mine... we made some light grafitty Great fun making tags in the air. the spraycan was just to ad to the grafitty atmosphere.
