Our maintenace manager recently asked me for a recomendation on what to get for his guys. We work in a manufacturing plant, and I had given one of his guys an el cheapo LED light that I had bought off amazon. It's one of those that uses a CREE LED and advertizes 300 lum but only puts out about half that even with a 14500. Anyway, the maintenace guy really liked it, and so did the manager. These guys basically need a smallish flood light that will do a good job of lighting up a dark space like an electrical cabinet. Most of them still have the old incondescent mini-mag lights or one of the 99 cent specials that have half a dozen LEDs in the head and only put out 20 lum or so. I suspect that AA batteries are their preferred power source. Since the guys have their own tool budget, I suspect that the manager would like to stay on the cheap side if it's something he's going to give them for free. The light that I gave his guy was less that $5.50 delivered, but now their up to almost $9, and while it's a great $5 light, I'm not convinced that it's a great $10 light.

Any thoughts?

Yes nip down to your local trade store where they sell fasteners and fixings, most have a decent range of lights for the trade.

The 9 LED AA lights are probably the best bet.

But all the guys will like you better if you push UltraFire 3 Mode Sipik SK68 clones.

The Energizer AA Tactical puts out 50 Lumens, has a great clip, and the hotspot is very large slowly fading into the spill, ie floody. It would be a great light.

Or maybe a Streamlight Stylus Pro pen light.

Are you looking for a specific form factor of light? How about a headlamp? Gives you totally hands free operation. There are plent of cheap ones out there that use AA, AAA and so forth. Or step them up to better ones for modes, warranties, and longevity. Just a thought, but i will never go back to holding a light in the hand unless i must. JMO. ymmv.

I agree with the headlamp suggestion. Two hands to do the needed work while the light shines onto what you're looking at.

Im a headlamp fan myself. But penlights and small single cell lights are handy and have their place.

Pelican 1920 penlight is another good one.

Rayovac Indestructable 2xAA.
Rayovac Indestructable Headband

Both are available from your local hardware / box store or any popular online etailer. Keeps you out of the support loop as well.

My thought also. Cheap, durable and inexpensive. 100 Lumen too on high
