Here's a different lighting option...

How about a PT Aurora (or Petzl Zipka) headlamp (keeps the hands free) for the routine lighting use. Use 3 NiMH AAAs and get a charger with 4 independent charging circuits (like the RayOvac 1 hr charger). That way you can charge 3 at a time. This will provide years of cheap light power.

Then...get the Brinkmann LX or better yet the Scorpian, small, light, REALLY bright and not too expensive. Only turn it on when you need that dazzling light...and it won't be too expensive to operate! (the scorpian will fit nicely in your pocket and has a nice, easy switch should you need it quickly).

For more security when there are some people around, carry a whistle on a chain around your neck. BTW...I really like the cheap wallet idea with a little cash and meaningless plastic cards. What a great, cheap idea for some simple but likely effective personal security!

Sorry, just had to say it as I see our rights here in the U.S. slowly being taken away in the name of "safety".

Heck, even batons are illegal...

Over the past few years, crime has evolved here too

, but I am sure that if
fire-arms are available to the general public, arms-related crimes will rise too...

Remember, the need to defend will always exist, the way this is accomplished is depending on the means available...

I'd recommend an Ultrastinger. It's rechargeable, much easier to carry, bright enough to dazzle with, and makes a wonderful striking weapon (without being conspicuous). To improve grip on my US, I wrapped the handle in Pac-Skin, a multi-purpose product made by Pachmayr to improve grip.

(also the long throw of the beam means you can spot trouble from a safer distance.)

Luminance:

I whipped about 4" of fluorescent orange nylon cord on my Ultrastinger grip. Makes it easier to find, firmer to grip, and the cord could come in handy in a pinch.

How about an M3 with TID (If there is such a thing for an M3) and the HOLA lamp assembly? That ought to make anyone think twice about mugging you...

I recieved my Elektrolumnens 5W cyan mag...this is THE torch! It gives very good illumination even in the appaling fog we've been getting! This torch instills confidence in the user...Coalville and the surrounding area's dark alleyways are normlly no-go areas...but not any more! Like the Blueross already mentioned, the colour of the torch's output un-nerves a would be assailant... if you pulseb it in the dark at someone at close quarters it will render them blind for a few seconds... enough for you to make good your escape.
As a last resort, the torch's heavily constructed body can be used as a truncheon without fear that you will destroy yet another filament bulb!
LED torches are inherently more reliable than filament bulbed torches, so offer confidence in that way too!

Ultra Stinger is what I would use. Bright, can be used as a baton, not as heavy as a 3D mag, and rechargable.

I wouldn't want to be caught by a criminal with only a bright light that couldn't be used as a club if I were rushed. Thats why I wouldn't choose the SF M6.

The SL-20X is nice too but quite a bit heavier than a US.

Mags are great too, cheap but not that bright compared to the competiton.

Now if pepper spray wasn't illegal, then the 11" Tigerlight No Question about it!

I own the US, Tigerlight, 3 and 6 cell D-Mags, various others, and am considering the SL-20x.

I was Christmas shopping last night and stopped by the Bridgestone store in the mall.

They had a flashlight called the "Watchdog." It was about the size of a five cell Maglight with a 2-1/2 inch reflector. It had three switches. one for the light, one for the barking dog (sounds like a very large dog), and one for the siren.

Heavy. Make a good club.

Batteries were weak and the beam was dim. Siren and dog still loud.

The bite? $50.00 US.

I think dual 5 watt Royal Blues ought to make people think twice about comming near you. Electrolumens had created a torch with 2 5 watters I believe? Maybe he can make one for you? Have 1 2D *ag lite and a 6AA battery holder. That makes a compact dangerous package for blinding. (I guess it's blinding only) And don't ever stare at the light to *test it on yourself to see how disabling it is*. You won't like it.

Sell the led...buy a UltraStinger...Self-Defense is illegal in the UK. Your flashlight accidentally fell on the badguys head as you told the badguy that he can 1) have your money 2)have your wife. 3) Have all your children ....then the flashlight fell on his head...Good Luck.
