Light meter question

I just recieved my light meter and was wondering, what is the default distance (benchmark) that is used to measure the output of a flashlight? 1 foot, 1 yard, 1 meter? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Usually one meter.
Approx 40 inches.
