Lightning effect using leds?

Hi I would like to build a circuit to simulate a lightning bolt, I mean to be on and of at random intervals. And constant ON switch option for this circuit is welcome too.

I purchased some Lichtenberg figures (bm41/CT1/dm13) and want to illuminate them nicely.

Any ideas on a simple circuit that uses a white or blue led? powered by one or 2 aa would be nice.
