Lights available without hole in hot spot?

Hi all,

Any recommendations please for 2 cell 123 lights, without the nasty dead hole contained within the hot spot?

I read and subsequently saw that most XPG R5 lights with a smooth reflector exibit this trait, but also read that one or two other forum members have experienced the same this with an OP reflector too.

I presume that the S2 binned LEDS also do the same, as they are still of the XPG format, no?

Put simply - I won't have it!

Any recommendations greatly apprciated - thanks.

You are probably going to end up with tons of suggestions which can be mind boggling if you do not list down what you are expecting other than not having a donut hole in the beam. I can suggest a few but am not sure if it would fall within your budget range and needs. HDS rotary and clicky is definitely donut free but you asked for 2 x CR123. Quark has a very smooth beam too with the exception of the Turbo series. Then again, lights with smooth beams are usually floody since most of them uses an orange peel reflector.

Maybe you can list down some basic info like a realistic budget range, throw or flood, size and form factor, and maybe runtime? This would help narrow down your search.

I've seen it with both XP-G R5 and S2. Guess it has something to do with the size/shape of the led dye and micro lens, not the bin. Some reflectors are better at masking it.

In my experience the XM-L doesn't exhibit this symptom. Some people will dismiss it as being floody and not a good thrower. I beg to differ, with a proper reflector it is, check the Fenix TK41 to see what it can do just on AA batteries.

P.S. I have only one XP-E light so I can't vouch this is relevant, but it ain't got no hole in the hotspot either.

Surefire E2DL has TIR optic and no hole in the hot spot. The E2DL has an XR-E emitter that is matched well to the TIR optic. My UK Zoom lights also don't have hot spot hole probably due to the optics, which are not TIR, but work very well for this light.
