This was pulled from another thread..........

I love my new lionheart - Thanks Mr. Bulky - but only have one pila. I have discovered that the brass spacer for the pila charger that screws into the charging cradle is the perfect length spacer with a R123 in the lionheart. As such it allows me to use a R123 without a waded up piece of foil. This battery setup produces the same output albeit with shorter runtime.

So.....I'm thinking......

Using the brass spacer on the spring with a regular 123 cell you can get the threads started without the instant on as with the Pila....so you should be able to switch modes very easily and pop the Pila back in after.

I think this just may be the ticket....now, to go look for the instructions.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hadn't you heard the quickest way to get into program mode? If you are running with the new spring instead of the old bellevue (I think that's what it was called) spring. Just take your LH, hold the button, and then tap down on something logo end first, the spring will compress, and you'll lose contact. When it reconnects, you are in program mode. no need to even unscrew the head anymore.

EDIT
It doesn't take that much effort to get it to work so don't use a lot of force. As George states below, it wouldn't be good for the internals.

Good hint. I just tried the tap the end trick and it works. I have to unscrew the body several threads though to make it work. I think that I might cut some length off the spring to make this trick work better. I am concerned about unscrewing the tube too far and tapping the body and putting too much strain on the threads when they are cockeyed.

Anybody else try this trick? Any concerns about damaging the electronics?

Regards.

Well, pounding on the unit is not going to be that nice to any of the internals. I assume you do realize a new firmware release/upgrade is coming out within a few days that changes the whole menu system entry to a triple click scheme that no longer requires unscrewing the battery tube...

Thanks George for the update - I look forward the V2. In the mean time though, I ended up pulling the spring out and bending it so that it is shorter by about half the original height. There is still quite a bit of "spring" left but now all I have to do is unscrew the body about 1.5-2 turns and give it a light tap on the tail, against my palm, with the button depressed to break the electrical contact. The light blinks to tell me that I was successful. Screwing it all the way down results in no spring compression bounce. I think that this process, without the tap, was how the original bellevue spring worked.

I think that all Lionheart owners who will not get the software upgrade should try this mod. I have had concerns like others about stripping the threads in changing modes. Obviously getting the new software will fix this issue but this mod is the next best thing.

Regards.

Hey George,
I've found that it takes very little to get the job done. I also figured that most ppl won't be needing to get into program mode that often. That being the case, one extra hit here and there will be pretty much part of the normal wear and tear.

I guess me using the word "bang" didn't help though. I'll go fix it.

BTW I just installed a V2 board in my CPF SE LH (did I mention this already somewhere?) and it DOES solve all screwing/unscrewing hassles. And relieves any need for "taplighting" as well... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

This new program is gonna be a winner (and will be used in the upcoming LionCub as well)...

Whoa! Hooold on a sec there sonny.
Aren't you on a nice long deserved vacation?
What's this hear about an upcoming Lioncub already?
Not that I'm unhappy to hear there is an upcoming LionCub, I just figured that it wasn't gonna happen til summer or something.

Well Kat, with developmental lead times being what they always are, perhaps summer might become the anticipated *delivery time* (although I fully intend to make it well before that), but rest assured there will be announcements and updates way prior to that. V2 LH microprocessor in an even smaller size, much more beam power (with optional LionHead - although of course it won't be a "keychain light" any longer when it's screwed on), and of course more features than the original LionHeart...

BTW yes I am indeed on "vacation" - vacation is the Fun time, during which I get to fulfill all manner of fantasies (flashlight related of course) by planning and developing new lights - "work" is when I finally have to drag out the HAT Team and we actually Build the dang things...but the dream-up activities leading to that is the truly enjoyable and vacation-like time for me - although my *REAL* vacation, which is attending the vaunted SHOT Show beginning the end of this month, will be when I am forced to not touch anything flashlight-development-related as I "find" myself (yeah, find myself in the middle of the SHOT Show event floor surrounded by new-release flashlights and - fellow CPF'ers)!!!
