I just ran across this. They have an 880 mAh li-poly cell that's 12 grams. And a $59 charger that can do li-poly and li-ion: Plantraco Hobby
You could use this with 18650's (li-ion) pulled from laptop batteries (3.6V 1800mAh) if you wanted. But there would be more of a risk of overcharging. Still, this charger cuts out below a certain current (you can't trickle charge lithium cells).
One downside is that if you use naked cells, you run a risk of over-discharging the cells and killing them. One excessively deep discharge and they're dead. However, since you can get 18650's in refurbished laptop packs for something like $3 each, you might risk this if you are in the mood.
Or just build in a discharge protector -- a power FET and 3V power supply monitor IC should be able to do it.
