Long awaited CK Sauce makes its debut!

Ed,
Did you notice, on the Color Kinetics site, the wand model that is powered by a single "N"
cell?-I wonder if REI sells that one too??
Also,-didn't Craig review this (AA) wand a few months ago...?
Now I gotta go up the street to my local REI 2 check this out

Craig, is thing all that it's cracked up to be? Is the effect spectacular? or just ho-hum? This thing piques my interest, and the price is surprisingly affordable

My test samples were both prototypes, and both have had some problems - but these problems were supposedly addressed in full with the production units.

I was surprised at the lower than expected price. I was expecting to see them sell for $30 to $50, not $15.

The effects you can do with these are different than those available from either the Rav'n or the Raven. So if you want the ultimate set of party lights, buy all three of these.

I have yet to see the "keychain" Sauce, or any of the other Sauce products shown on the website, so my only experience has been with the prototypes of the regular-sized Lightwand. And aside from some technical issues that arose because they were prototypes, my experince with them has been positive.

For those LED enthusiasts here in the UK, you can save yourself REI`s high overseas shipping charges and get your CK Sauce Lightwands from http://firebox.com . They cost £15 plus £3 P+P, give or take a penny or 2. I just ordered one, should be here in a couple of days.
Firebox also lists the Keychain Sauce but it is out of stock at present, and they also have the Saucer version "coming soon".

I check the store in Northridge, CA and came out empty handed. Did you store have any?

The Arcadia (SoCal) store said none at that store rite now, but that they would be in regular stock in about 2-3 weeks, and also said if you wanted one right away, to call other REI stores in your area, -as some may have 1 or 2 units....
p.s. salesperson indicated they would also have some of the other models of C.K.Sauce line.

It`s great! I can probably sit and watch this thing for hours, except unfortunately I`ve got other things to do. Maybe tonight....
Brighter than I expected, although the red LED seems dimmer than the green and blue. They appear to be all Nichia "Super-Oval" LEDs in semi-transparent coloured packages (I got too curious and took it apart for a look after only 5 minutes of recieving it!). One AA cell gives the power through a little step-up boad inside. I got an orange bodied one, it`s slightly transparent with a slight sparkly mettalic finish close up. You can`t see much of what goes on inside apart from the glow of the LEDs.

Shall I tell you all what the secret modes are.....nah don`t want to spoil the fun!

As soon as they`re avaliable (and assuming I can still afford one), I`ll be getting a keychain version too. For now, I`ll try and get a preliminary page up about this one by this evening, its address will probably be http://electriclights.tripod.com/flashlights/sauce.htm but don`t go looking yet- cos it`s not there!.

That link to my page should work now, since that page now exists.

These things are even better after dark! Perfect to just stare at and help you get off to sleep I reckon- set it to the slowest fade mode and it`ll turn itsself off after 10 minutes anyway, by which time you should be asleep....

Thanks, and well done Chris.

That red/blue is like the beautiful bright purple glow/spot that is achievable on my Neon Star with the two red and one blue LEDs locked on together.

Look for a flurry of new reviews on my site soon... I have the Mini Lightwand, the LightOrb, the LightSprite, the LightWasher, and the LightSaucer.

Lucky you!

I`m still waiting for Firebox.com to get the little keychain sized one back in stock, and I believe the battery operated Saucer will be sold on there soon too but the plug-in ones will never make it here- at least not till they`re redesigned to run on 240 volts- which probably won`t happen soon if ever. Where`d you get those from? Are they all on the market yet?

Why can`t the world just all agree on one voltage and one type of socket, it`d make life much easier (if a bit dull, adaptors make life fun!)....

I'm one of their beta testers, so they occasionally send samples for me to blow up, which I quite handily did to one of the new units already.

Good question... I guess the Europeans figured 240V would be more efficient, while the US figured 110V would pose less of an electrocution risk.

Bump!
I just picked up a "Lightorb" from my local Target. It was marked down to $6.98, so I figured I would give it a try. I like it! I might have to go get another one(or two). I have it plugged in over the dog's food bowl. A little color wash to help them eat.

Man! That makes me mad--as my Target doesn't have *any* Sauce products.

Another store, however (Closeout type place) did have some Sauces at a great, once in a lifetime price (Think 90% off retail)...so I do have a nice selection of the things
tongue.gif

No Lightorb though.

**EDIT**
Wait! (Duh!) I get these all mixed up, I DO in fact have a Lightorb, it's the one that screws into the light socket I don't have. I like the Orb just a little more than the Washer, but I think this could have something to do with the fact that I have woodgrain walls in my room so the colors don't mix too well with the Washer.

I love the Saucer, just because the color changing area of it is so large, yet stays quite evenly lit...but the Wand would have to be my fav out of the two. I have a black Light Wand, I put a strip of narrow electrical tape at the edge where the clear meets the black, so you can't see the individual LEDs---it enhanced the effect greatly.

I might go back and get a "Lightwand" also. They didn't have any of the bulbs, just the 2 plug in ones, the wand and saucer. Cool little lights.

C. Crane has several of these CK "Sauce" products, I just got 4 Light Tro's from them, these screw into regular size light sockets.
11 LEDs, 5 red, 3 green, 3 blue. Won't light up a room to full daylight, by any means, but good for mood lighting or just plain fun. Makes a great hallway or bathroowm night-light.
